realy strange dvi issue!

I have a self built mce 2005 (oem) machine with a radeon 9600 connecting through dvi to a gateway plasma tv (ed only, so max res is 848*480), it worked on the first boot, put after restarting or cold booting it (the plasma) gives unsuported resultion warning, if I unplug the dvi cable and plug it back in, it works fine, any suggestions as to what could cause this behavior and how to fix it?
 
That's a pretty wonky resolution to make any video card run. I can't really think of a fix; try new drivers maybe (unless you've got the latest ones) but otherwise, I can't think of how to get those two to play nice.

Does text look good on that plasma?
