RealVNC doesn't work for me even locally

I initally tried connecting from work. there is no firewall when using the wireless but i get connection refused errors. so i tried to connect from another computer on the LAN and i'm getting connection refused and connection timeout errors. I have forwarded port 5901 on my router. it's a dlink di-614+. any suggestions as to why i can't connect?

kind of an update. i stoppped the server mode and ran the user mode and i was able to connect locally. for some reason i can't connect when server mode is running. is there a problem with running realvnc in user mode?

What operating system are you using? Any software firewalls turned on, such as the one built into WinXP?

well, i think i tried ultravnc once but it was a little more complicated to setup. i'm using winxp and yes the built-in firewall is enabled.

Read the content of the Ulr@VNC link you might find the reason to your problem.

If you have SP2, then you have to tell it to allow connections on port 5800 or 5900 before you can remotely connect to the VNC server that's running. Otherwise, try disabling the built-in Windows firewall and see if you can connect with it disabled. Chances are, it could be blocking attempts to connect.

well, i have a router and have forwarded ports 5900 and 5800 on it and can connect when in user mode. I disabled windows xp firewall and i still couldn't connect in server mode but i could connect in user mode. i guess i'll just settle with user mode unless there is a reason not to.
