Realty: Closing fees on a condo?

Your lawyer should get that money back for you when he does all the paperwork. That's how ours worked. Also did you send a letter in writing to your Association to let them know to stop charging you as of your closing date? If not, do it.

Our condo closed May 30, and we sent them a notice earlier in May to let them know not to charge us for June's. Also the lawyer settled the cost of what was left of the month, 1 day, that we got refunded back to us by the buyers of the condo. They do this with property taxes too.

We're closing tomorrow and the Association charged us the full month's fee. Is that common practice?

Not only that if there are unpaid fees from the previous owner you will have to pay that also.

Yes, it is common practice.

If you want the house and it's only a couple of months it is not that ridiculous. I can see where it could be a deal breaker for some though.

It is the owner's responsibility to pay outstanding fees and taxes. Your realtor (or lawyer-for those of you on the East coast) should have run a property profile prior to getting to this point though to find out if there were any liens on the property.

BTW-I've bought 2 homes and never had to pay for any outstanding liens.

I started paying condo association fees when I received the keys to the place...paid the former owner a pro-rated share of that month's fees.
