Purchased ASUS A7N266-VM MB w/RTL8201L onboard network adapter and having problems connecting to other computers on my network using TCP/IP protocol. I setup my network connections to use Client for Microsoft networks and tcp/ip like all my other computers on the network except for the server which also happens to have tcp/ip and Netbeui, all PC's are W98se and server is NT.

As it is I can not log on to the server BUT I am getting an ip address from the Cisco 800 series ISDN router acting as DHCP server I can also ping everybody but only by ip address not by name. So I add Netbeui and still not able to connect to the server but when I also add IPX/SPX I can now log onto the server and when I check Network Neighborhood I see the server me and a Intel print server which uses TCP/IP and gets its IP from the DHCP but I am unable to connect to the print server when I click on it, don't see any other computers on the network.

From the other computers mostly Dell's which all have there own NIC I can see the computer I'm having problems with in Network neighborhood but I can not connect to it I also can not ping it. So on one of the Dell's I add Netbeui and now I can connect to the pc with the A7N266 MB, still can not ping it though. On the ASUS pc I can now see the Dell I added Netbeui to and can connect to it, I can also ping it but not by it's name only by ip address, which really doesn't bother me to much. I can add Netbeui to the rest of the computers and should be up and running with 2 exceptions. The Intel print server only uses TCP/IP and I also have a Zerox Splash printer connected to the network which uses TCP/IP not sure if I can add other protocols to it, these I can not connect to with the ASUS pc and I am putting together 2 more systems with the ASUS MB in them.

So to wrap up, it seems the RTL8201L onboard network adapter is having a problem with the TCP/IP protocol, the only way I could get it to connect with the server was to add TCP/IP, Netbeui and IPX/SPX and the only way I could connect to the other computers on the network was to add Netbeui to their protocol list.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but under the network adapter properties on advanced tab there is a setting for Network Address and the value can be either something you type in or not present. Doesn't give an explanation of what the value should contain, I've tried different settings either typing in the IP address or computers name and neither one made a difference :) I've also never seen this setting on other NIC's I've used in the past whether it be 3com, linksys or netgear.

I know the simple answer is to just forget about it and install a NIC already, but I would still like to figure out why the TCP/IP protocol is giving me headaches with this onboard LAN. Thanks for your suggestions.
