I recently put together a system with the P5WD2 motherboard and Pentium D processor. I still havent got all the peices working yet. I am having major problems getting the audio working properly. I have XP Pro installed on the system with Service Pack 2 and all the latest updates.
When I install the Realtek driver supplied on the CD, it looks like it goes through the installation, but when I reboot the system, I have sound (if I had already plugged in the audio out cable to one of the jacks), however, the Realtek icon does not appear in the right bottom panel. Also, as long as I have the audio plugged in at the time of boot-up, I have audio coming out, however, once I pull the jack out and put it back in, it does not work. Looks like the Reltek Audio Manager is hung. Since the auto-sensing software portion of the driver isn't working, I believe the system is not able to determinge what I have plugged into the jacks. When I called Tech support, the guy just heard me and said that he would issue an RMA# for me to return the MB and get it checked out. But I don't believe it is the hardware. Something in the OS is preventing the driver from getting installed fully. The very first time when I installed the driver it worked fine and it popped up the window asking for information on what I had plugged in and so on. After that I updated the bios with the latest bios from the website, put in Service pack 2 and applied all the OS updates/patches from Microsoft and since then the audio driver never worked properly. I tried going back to the old bbios (that is supplied on the CD) and removed Service pack 2, hoping to solve the issue, but just didnt work. Whenever I shut down the system, it pops up a window saying that the Realtek Audio Manager is hung and needs to kill the process before shutting down windows. I downloaded the latets Realtek driver from Asus website and installed this driver. then I downloaded. No improvement. Then I downloaded the latest driver from Realtek website (V1.22) and installed that driver. Same result with all the drivers. Any ideas ??
The second question I have is, is it possible to change the FSB from 800 to 1066 having a Pentium D processor. I was told by the tech support guy that I need to have an unlocked processor, but he wasn't sure if the pentium D was an unlocked or locked down processor.
