Realtek 8139 NIC driver update issues

Have the subject NIC on a Win98 SE machine, sharing one static DSL line on a home network. For the most part, works reasonably well, but run into issues that may be network related http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=434329.

Attempted to update drivers, found on the Realtek web site, and ran into all kinds of hassles. When rebooting the machine, Windows would not load, stopping just short of the network logon (went past the windows logo, showed the vortex dos audio drivers loading, etc). Rebooted the machine in safe mode to disable the network card and successfully rebooted windows. If the card was simply re-enabled, it didn't show any conflicts and seemed to work properly - could see other machines on the network - but couldn't get to the internet, and the system would eventually lock up, due to msqsry32 not responding.

I repeated this sequence, attempting to reinstall the old drivers, to no avail. There were 3 drivers that I was asked to select during the install process - iphlpapi.dll, vip.386 and telnet.exe. Initially, I assumed that these had nothing to do with the problem, and I repeatedly accepted the recommendation to keep the current, newer file. Out of options, I decided to use the older one the system was trying to install, which seemed to solve the problem (versions 5.00.1952.1, 4.10.2226 and 5.00.1755.2, respectively).

Comments? Suggestions? Not sure if I should just spend a few bucks and get a better NIC.
