I've been playing it off an on for a couple months whenever I have a little time to kill.

I think it's a blast; the gameplay is generally fun and it's easy to make progress.

At the same time it can be an incredibly frustrating game with the perma-death factor. Three days ago I lost my stat-maxed necromancer with the second best gear in the game. That was 2-3 weeks of work gone in a heartbeat because I made a careless mistake. Now I'm back to square one with no wealth, in exactly the same position as someone who's playing for the 1st time.

Yeah, the perma-death is what "killed" this game for me. It is cute, but I don't have enough time to start from scratch every time I make a mistake. On the other hand, I am sure that sort of thing draws others to the game.

Takes maybe 4 hours of gameplay to hit level 20. Started playing this 2 days ago and I've already had several level ~9 characters and 1 level 20.

Mainly just going around unlocking the Character classes whenever I feel like it.

Game is not just about getting to level 20. It's about farming pots to max your characters stats. Can take weeks even a month or 2 to fully max and if you die in the process you're SOL. Always stock pots before chugging them.

I just started playing this game last night. It seems like a fun little time-waster, I'll definitely be playing it some more.

I haven't gotten much further than the tutorial, but can you describe what this is?

Edit: Is "pots" shorthand for "potions"?

Find a train and it'll take you 1/4 of the time.

Oh indeed but level 20 is often a catalyst for a new character class unlock.

Personally I want myself a Necromancer and Trickster so max level is quite important to me.

My level 20 archer which I suicided was still using a bow he found at level 4, simply because nothing had dropped.

And on exp trains, I seem to find them then lose them just as quickly.

[hipster] I played RotMG back in Alpha before anyone knew about it; before it was posted on Joystiq, ported to Kongregate, and then eventually to Steam! [/hipster]

For what it's worth I do miss grave looting! (you used to be able to pick up people's gear/inventory from the tombstone when they died)

Sorry took a few days away from my PC.

When you hit level 20 you can go to the middle of the map (Refered to as Godlands) and fight extremely powerful monsters. If you scroll out your minimap you can't miss the giant chunk of people in the middle almost all of whom are level 20.

If you join in fighting the gods and deal enough damage they all have a chance to drop a purple loot sack. These can only be looted by you they're essentially soulbound. Each type of god has a chance to drop a stat increasing potion (Defense Attack Vitality etc).

All of your stats have a maximum value eg. 25 defense, 50 attack etc and it changes depending on class. The goal is to max these stats to have what is referred to as a 8/8 character. However if lets say you chug 6 defense potions then die you've lost 6 defense potions and have to start all over. That's why it's advised to store them in your vault till you have at least the 25 defense potions (40 for knight) so you can survive in godlands a lot better and do not get 1 shot by gods.

I have to go now but I'll talk about gear as soon as I get back because gear is the hugest pain in the ass in this game.

There's a detailed wiki now as well.

I played it a few months ago for pretty much an entire weekend and got tired of it. Fun, but not for long.

I play it for a week or two then stop, usually because I died, but I always come back eventually. You can hit max lvl in about 15 minutes now. And decent gear is cheap (the game's economy is based on potions that drop from the most common high-level monsters). And then there are lots of short dungeons that most classes can solo. It's also free (you can spend real money, and many people do, but it doesn't put you at a disadvantage not to). Free is good.
