REALLY Thin PC? From who?

Looking for an ultra-thin PC to outfit my guest room with, and perhaps another one to tuck away downstairs in the living room somewhere. I will be getting 17"/18"/19" LCD's and mounting them to the wall, I just need a little shelf for the mouse and keyboard, and perhaps the PC can mount underneath that against the wall. I'd like them to be quiet too. I was actually looking at the rack-mount servers but I don't think they have their own power supply. They're too expensive anyway.

Any ideas?

Rackmounts come with their own PSU. Setting up a 2U server would be a lot cheaper than a 1U, but still fairly costly.

Are you going to mount the computer to the wall?

Probably...right under the keyboard shelf. That would be the slickest setup. I want as few wires and objects visible as possible.

Is uATX still the smallest form factor? Or is there one smaller now? Maybe I could build my own. I would like it to be quiet, though, and from what I remember about PSU's, they're almost all fairly loud.

You can go Mini-ITX and couple it with a fanless Via CPU. But that's not a very fast computer. 😛

Pre-built, the easy way out is the Dell route. The 4700C looks like a nice slim machine, I can't comment on its quietness though.

Or maybe a laptop (used even) and hook up your keyboard, mouse and monitor to it.

Do you plan on building the shelf? If so you could probably integrate something into it as a PC case.

Otherwise, you might want to try to get your hands on one of those thin, refurbished Dell systems.

I'm not much of a mac guy myself; but if you are ok with them this sounds an awful lot like a good place for a G5 Imac. On the PC side, a Thinkcenter S series from IBM or the Dell Optiplex SX280 might well fit the bill.
