Really stupid Server Board RAM Question

Memory w/ ECC doesnt survive errors, mearly reports that an error has occured or fixes it (I dont know exactly, but survival isnt the word i'd use)
"will standard DDR2 Memory work in Server boards??"
No, standard memory is standard. You would need buffered ECC memory. Why are you thinking of buying this stuff w/o this base level knowledge?

'gotta start somewhere, don'tcha?' Fair enough. So did you agree to build a server for someone or to recommend a server to them? If so, be nice and tell them you're not the right person to go to for now (until you educate yourself in server hardware/software)

There is an entry level chipset for Xeons from intel that supports 'vanilla' ddr2 now, the 5100 chipset. Tyan and supermicro have boards based off it (I think Asus does too now?). FB-dimms don't necessarily have to come with ECC btw.

so....there's a chance? Any risk of damage to the board/cpu if i try it? Reason i ask is i have easy access to standard DDR2-667, and really don't need the super duper performance.

thx
