Really small/quick QUESTION...

I don't know if anyone is familiar with this motherboard but I have a BMC VP1543 that has a ALI M1541/1543C Chipset (Aladdin V). Now the manual says that it supports 66mhz and 100mhz SDRAM (DIMMS). Are these specifically EDO RAM? Can I have PC100 RAMS on this motherboard?

It can use SDRAM, and quite possibly EDO SDRAM which would be 50 or 60ns.

Ok, thanx. I'm confused because if I just go onto the website specs it says "Supports 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and 256 MB EDO/SDRAM DIMM"

But I guess I should trust the manual more. So does that mean I can get the PC100's?

Hi!

The EDO were made for 66Mhz. I've owned EDO that ran fine at 83Mhz too. That was a SIM verisons.
The SDRAM DIMM is way longer than EDO SIMM and it was manufactured for 66, 100, 133, 150, ... Mhz. But I saw DIMM EDO's too.
Ususaly boards support mixing EDO with SDRAM (the EDO must be in pairs if it is SIM).

Stick with SDRAM now. It's cheaper and easier to find than EDO DIMMs.

I searched for your board in google [here] and from what I understand you can put any SDRAM in that board. You can even put SDRAM 133 in it, but it will not be used at maximum. Thats it.

Have a second opinion on this, before you buy memory.
Cheers,

Well I sure hope it will support the PC100 or 133's because normal EDO ram is too expensive and hard to find like you said.

Cookieman, if you can get anyone to 2nd your opinion it would be great.

It says it takes PC100 and PC66 (100Mhz and 66Mhz) SDRAM according to you. Not EDO. So get PC100 or PC133 since that's the most common. Stay away from anything bigger than 128MB, maybe just get 64's if you want to be certain.

Yes Zach it's BCM not BMC, it was only a typo.

I already know of the manufacturer's website, I've had it ever since I bought the mobo almost 4 years ago.

Anyways, thanx for the replies, it seems like it's safe to go ahead and purchase the PC100's.

Are they 5V or 3.3V? My not-that-old Mac takes 5V EDO or FPM and that is enough to disqualify the use of modern 3.3V SDRAM's.

It's modern, it's a K6-III board..

The K6-III board definitely supports Sdram. (I overlooked the type of the processor one can install in that board, silly me :) ) Much older boards than that suported Sdram (TX/VX/HX/ Socket 7 boards...).
Even my broather had an K6-III board on which he used SDRAM. I'm not sure of the modell though.

Zach:
Don't be confused by what EDO means. The EDO was manufactured mostly in the SIM format. But I once find a DIMM module that was EDO!!!, But that was a long time ago.

MacaroneePenguin:
I positive you will encounter no problem by using regular PC100 Sdram.

Keep us posted if you buy and install it, OK?

Cheers,

Yeah, no kidding. That's why MacaroneePenguin's board supports both EDO and FPM with DIMM slots. Add it's SIMM. EDO was just 72pin SIMM's, there wee 30pin too.

As for MacaroneePenguin, if you had the website, why ask? It says right there it takes PC100. I went to the trouble of finding the info and letting you know and I got a "Yeah I knew that one" type answer. It's a bit discouraging.
