In before the lock ;)

Mentally ill people have long been ignored and treated as lepers. Unfortunately that attitude is still strong as ever. I would be willing to say discrimination of the mentally ill rivals that of color prejudice.

Actually, in very controlled situations, shock therapy has been proven to be effective in specific cases.

Because all prejudice is at root the hate of the other for feelings one has about oneself, the prejudice against the mentally ill is the most profound prejudice there is. It is a prejudice that is defined by shunning. We flee from the mentally ill, abandon them and all potential treatments because real knowledge about the mentally ill will always lead to a finger pointing at us. We are the source and repository of all self hate and that is what, more than anything else, the mentally ill, those who can't keep the lid on their illness, is the source of their infection.

The only difference between us and the mentally ill is that their defenses are broken. It is also why Jesus came for them. They are closer to sanity than us because their egos are in the process of being destroyed.

This fits in with the fascist corporate state mentality that says anyone who is a drain on society should not exist.

While being incredibly ethically questionable.

Short term, yes. Do you have a link to a credible peer reviewed study that shows a statistically significant number stayed "improved" over, say, a five year period or so?

Wrong about your Jesus comment and wrong about your analysis of the mentally ill. Pretty good entertainment though ;)

How is that any different than the way humanity has been throughout recorded history? Or for the rest of the animal kingdom for that matter.

The whole thing exemplifies the callous incompetence of the prison system in general, and of the people charged with his safe incarceration specifically. In legal terms, it's called depraved indifference, and is a form of manslaughter, at best...

Disgusting.

does that make it right? Similar arguments have been used in favor of segregation, slavery, eugenics, etc

;)

There is a point to what moonbeam said above but as usual it goes into lecture and high and mighty mode.

As some of you might know, I have a SIL who is down syndrome and it has made me aware of the challenges and rewards of having a mentally "ill"/"challenged" individual in one's life.
Quite often we as "normal" individuals expect people with mental issues to behave rationally or logically and when they don't we become upset or discouraged. We just don't understand what their mind is doing. Now, while I do believe someone who commits murder is mentally ill, it does not mean they should not face the punishment society has determined is appropriate for that behavior but I do think that we need to address any underlying mental condition that may be involved. This guy in the OP should have been treated as a mental patient, not a general prisoner IMO.

Wired magazine did an article not to long ago about very small and perfectly timed shocks to the brain helping Parkinson's patients. I don't know about the "longevity" but the article made it sound pretty darn promising.

After reading that article I'm truly saddened and angered. It's no wonder that I have such a disrespect for authority. Other then a lawsuit brought by the mother I see no one being charged with a crime or even being fired?

We had a case a while back in my state where a juvinile who was put into a boot camp died of dehydration. She was overweight and forced to run in over 100 degree heat. She started blubbering and became incoherent but the guards thought it was all an act. Then she collapased in the dirt and was left laying there for almost an hour until they decided to check and make sure she wasn't "faking". She was still alive, but died not long after.

And that occured with a nurse present. The nurse lost her job, but is still a nurse.... legally.

Fool, you find that only entertaining because you hate yourself more than anybody else does! :D

Anyway, that's pretty awful about this guy. The prison situation in this country sucks.

No, you are the one who is wrong, not me. Care to rebut this brilliant rejection of your brilliant rejection. In other words why waste people's time telling them they are wrong when you can't mount any form whatsoever of reasoned response. I was 2 when I last had this kind of discussion.

Why ethically questionable? A recent article in the Washington Post(Article on ElectroConvulsive Therapy) indicated that it is the treatment of last resort for many with severe depression who don't respond to anti-depressant drugs. And
The ECT of today is not the shocking scene depicted in books and movies. The overwhelming majority of patients receive the treatment voluntarily.

It has one severe side-effect: memory loss.

He doesn't hate himself more than anyone else does. Please don't start a war. Each of us is convinced we are the worst in the world so I'm completely convinced, emotionally and unconsciously of course, that I am more worthless than you. blackangst1 is simply convinced that he is worse than you or me. But as to who has the worst case of self hate, who can say? The disease is feeling the worst in the world, or being convinced maximally that is true, but who has the worst case objectively would be hard to say. It doesn't matter much either. What matters is that we are fighting a war on life and we don't know the enemy. We are afraid to feel how bad we feel and project our self hate out there. Many here for example try to make me feel bad as though that would help them. It's kind of a big waste of their time though since I already feel like the worst in the world. ;)
