really really stupid 98SE question...

I went from a VIA KX133 chipset mobo to a KT333 one. Using the same hard drive as before. Well, I guess Win98SE doesn't like what's going on, it hangs every time just as my wallpaper comes up. I've had this problem ever since I installed the new VIA drivers from the CD.

Looks like I may have to do a reinstall. Question: If I run 98SE setup from the CD, is it possible to just restore system files, or must I reformat and install from scratch? I know it's a basic question, but remarkably, this issue has never come up for me before. Thanks in advance.

You can install over the previous version keeping your files intact, but it is highly recommended that you do a fresh install on a clean, formatted hard drive.

Yep. Wax the drive before the install. Back up whatever you can if possible. I have only ever sucessfully made it through a mobo swap once with Win98. (Went from an Abit BX-6 to Abit BH-6 Raid.) Most of the time, Windows pukes on the new hardware.

OK. But if I do a reinstall over the existing installation, what are some potential problems?

As far as backing up data, well I can't even boot into windows without crashing. And in safe mode, for some reason, my CD-ROM and burner don't show up??

I remember that I was having problems once booting my computer - came up with a "STACKS" error. I had to reinstall. I did this by booting up with the Win 98 SE startup disk, and then installed Win 98SE again, over the top of the previous one. Fortunately, all my data was fully retained after the installation. Can't guarentee that it'll work perfectly for you, but it looks like it's your only option.

PS. Your CD drive will not show up in safe mode, it's normal. You'll have to resort to backing up files on either another hard disk, tape drive or the good ol floppy.

Cheers

You really have nothing to lose. Back up the hdd and re-install 98. If that doesn't do it, format and re-install. The second option is the best but since you have to re-install anyway, I'd try the first one in case you get lucky.

Even though it may be fun to reload and reorganize your hard drive, it's really not necessary, so long as you have copies of all the drivers for all the hardware in the machine.

Just go into the registry and delete the HKLM-->Enum key. Yep, the whole thing. It contains all the data on your hardware configuration.

Once you've done this, exit and reboot. When it comes up, you'll get several "new hardware found" messages and it will likely run through the New Hardware Wizard. As long as you've got all your driver disks in front of you, you should be done in no time.

I've done this at least 4 times. Every one has been painless.
