Its software company, most people are either programmers or graphics people, so my side is pretty intelligent people (save a few). However we have another dept that does hardware sales; network storage, encryption key fobs, etc.

The difference between the sales and tech side are huge. When we have company functions its hard for us to even converse with the sales staff, so we usually form into two groups

Because the sales staff talk to everyone and the programmers engineers are huddled in the corner scared of social contact. HAHA!!

Wow, it is so scary that people like that really do exist, and that their vote counts just as much as mine.

Ya I think it's safe to assume that someone who grew up in the USA was at least exposed to the information that there is a state in the USA called New Mexico at some point in thier life, probably more than once. What bothers me is that some people have such a lack of care about basic knowledge that they wouldnt retain such info until they actually needed it. Having gotten to your ealry 20's (I think shes 22) and never have had the need to know wether New Mexico was a state is troublesome.
Well, I don't know, there isn't much of a reason to know if New Mexico is a state or not, it isn't like it affects most careers. What is disturbing is that when someone says "New Mexico" She doesn't instantly think "Its a state". Much like when someone says England most people will think "Its a country" Or something to that effect.

If you asked me right now to name all 50 states I would probably fail (starts naming off 50 states). But if you where to name off random countries and states I would most definitely be able to identify which ones are US states. Its just how I am.

I think the biggest problem is that someone like this that knows nothing of the difference between states and countries will probably be voting this next election. That is where I have my fears.

It's not just an ad. It *was* part of mexico, prior to 1840-something.

Don't they teach this shit in school?

Take Iraq, for example. Despite nearly constant news coverage since the war there began in 2003, 63 percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 failed to correctly locate the country on a map of the Middle East. Seventy percent could not find Iran or Israel.
:(

Admittedly, not as bad as not being aware of the status of states within your own country but still..

I actually don't remember the 'purchase' of this land from mexico being discussed in elementary school although I do remember the Louisianna Purchase and Seward's Folly (alaska). I remember being told about the magnificent andrew jackson saving a struggling nation from those terrible savages and relieving them of their land.

When/where I went to school (primary/secondary), it was uncool to actually learn stuff like this. We did however learn how to rush into the hallways occasionally at the sound of a loud buzzer and prepare ourselves for a nuclear attack.

Most things I know now were learned after school...

That actually seems to be a pretty popular questions. . .not quite sure why.

I have some great stories about this one girl who works for me who asks the most insanely dumb questions, but to be better safe than sorry I'm going to keep my trap shut.

You should've told her that New Mexico is also an euphemism for sucking your supervisor off.

Then she plays the "my religious views are offended" card when you make so much as a suggestion that she stops being a pain in the ass. As if you needed confirmation, she's far from the "meet you in the middle" type, and I don't know whether I should bring the issue up to HR or just fucking shoot myself every time she starts to whistle. It's not easy to work in an environment that requires your concentration when someone insists on being obnoxious and doesn't know it.

A clearer-minded thinker would just fucking shoot HER every time she started to whistle. Just sayin'.

Well, I'm glad I grew up where I did. I was walking to the park by myself by the time I was in kindergarten.
