really, REALLY high temps

I have a ASUS P5AD2 motherboard, P4 3.2 gigahertz w/ stock heatsink, and an Antec NeoPower 480w EATX(or ATX v.2) and my temps are so high I won't even start it up (like 97 C) It only happened once that high, but before that it was consistently 55 C or above. I need some serious help. Thanks
 
Well get rid of that stock heatsink, thermalright makes really good ones. Are you overclocking if you are bring to default, to avoid high temps. What case you using. And see if there is adiquate cooling in your case. There is a really good site that shows the best fan arrangement

Umm 97C? thats unreasonably high. Check to see if your CPU fan is working? Also, touch the heatsink. In addition, if the heatsink doesnt burn you within half a second, check the thermal goop job.
 
Well, I have a CoolerMaster Cavalier case, and the CPU fan is running, really fast too (at least its loud). The thermal goop came with the heatsink, so shouldn't it work? By the way, that power supply doesn't have an outside fan, only one on the inside.
 
I don't want to touch it, because if I run it, it might wreck the CPU. It shuts down automatically to protect itself.
 
Another question, the ASUS motherboard has a built-in overclocking system. I think its screwing around with it too.
 
Nah shouldn't be screwing arund with it..... just to make ya happy though just use that lovely little jumper called the Clear CMOS jumper. Sit it there for about 5 secs and then start it up.

MAKE SURE that your HS is making contact with your processor core. The thermal grease when you take the HS off is there any smeared on the core or is it still bare?

Instead of that non-brand kinda of thermal compound, i would really apply artic silver 5, its only like $7 and is the best on teh market today. Your problem might be that your heatsink isnt making enough contact with your cpu.
 
Like Tiamat, Check th fan, and maybe the contact of your heatsink with the CPU is not good (thermal patch/ paiste), Anyway the extra few 10's you'll spend on a aftermarket CPU cooler is well worth it.
 
If you happen to have misplaced your motherboard booklet and you want to clear CMOS, just remove the button battery and go make yourself a snack. Eat your snack. Return and put the battery back in. Make sure you unplugged the powersupply from the wall outlet beforehand.
 
Currently I own an slk-900a. It is made by thermalright. It works great. They make great products. You definitely want to invest extra money in a high quality hs/fan. You won't regret it. Whether you plan on o'cing or not.
