Really quick question on T1 Line IP addys

If an apartment building has "T1" access, does that usually mean each computer has an external IP address, or do such connections usually use NAT (Network address translation) ?

it probably just means that is the pipe connecting the complex to the ISP/internet

My understanding is that NAT means there is only one visible external IP.

Not if you do a one to one NAT.

Depends. You *COULD* have class C IP's (Public IP'S), but for starters that is expensive, and secondly just not ideal for 99% of the people.

Most likely, you have a private IP (192.168.XXX.XX, or 10.10.XXX.XXX) with the only public ip being shown is that of either your router or the firewall on the wan side of things.

When you set up your intenet connection did you have to manually input an ip? If not then it is most likely the case above and you get your IP via DHCP.

at the apt complex i lived where we had T1
our IPs were 172.xxx.xxx.xxx.

i know 172 was the first number, were we behind a router then?

172.16.0.0 is the class B private address subnet, that would mean you were on NAT
