Really Odd Hardware Problem

To start off this problem first started after updating to XP SP3.

After a reboot the pc would only turn on for 2 seconds and shutdown.
I figured PSU must be bad, so i plugged it in another motherboard and it started fine.
Then I figured Mobo must be bad, so i unplugged peripherals and it booted but couldnt start windows because HD was disconnected. The computer will boot with all hardware installed except the sata HD. I plugged in an IDE drive and it booted fine. HD must be junk right? Nope put the hard drive in another computer (backed up the data) and it worked fine, I also put another sata HD that is used in another computer and the same thing happened (shut down after 1 second).

Heres the odd thing.
The only thing that keeps it from booting is when a SATA HD is plugged in with either (not both) the sata power port or the regular molex power. With just the sata data cable it boots without shorting out. Ive used different molex and sata connectors but none will boot for more than 2 seconds.

If the Mobo sata chip is busted then how does it even know the HD is a sata drive if it crashes without the sata data cable even plugged into the mobo. And if the PSU is bad then why does the molex connector work fine for an IDE HD but not the sata drives.

Hardware in computer
AMD 64 3000+
1gb 3200 DDR ram
Biostar T6100 939
160 WD cavair sata HD
400w PSU

Thanks for the help
