Really, no Firefox for Wells Fargo?

So I try to log into Wells Fargo and access a credit card and I get an error saying I need to use IE or Netscape. But Netscape is built on Firefox code. So I sent an e-mail recommending they support Firefox and this is what I got in reply:

"Wells Fargo requires the use of a browser that provides a high degree of security in order to protect your accounts (such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer). If you would like to learn which browsers are approved for Wells Fargo Online, please go to http://www.wellsfargo.com/browsers . Here, you can view our approved browser list or download a secure browser."

Is this unfounded stupidity on Wells Fargo's part or is there a method to their madness?

I have a virtual machine with FF 2.0.0.4 installed, and since it's up and running at the moment, I gave their browser test a try. It passes. So maybe there's something else amiss. Is the rest of your system fully updated, system time/date/year is correct, etc?

Huh  It's exactly as you described. I don't know what to tell you, except email their tech people and report it.

I thought it strange too. I can't remember how long its been that FF would work on a web page. Even MS stuff loads on FF now.

Just curious, and wanted to explore a little, why a bank would not use FF. A can't think of any technical limitations to FF, especially regarding security, thats the whole reason I switched from IE to FF (got a credit card number snatched using IE).

I would assume that it's just lazy programmers using a User-Agent check that says "if not Netscape or IE, tell them their insecure browser sucks and they should upgrade." That way they only have to test in Netscape and IE. There's no reason that I'm aware of that it should work in Netscape and not Firefox, or that makes Netscape "more secure" than Firefox.

Yeah, the whole thing just struck me as odd, more of a shock than anything.

When I had the CC number stolen the page that I typed into was not secure, but after you clicked send, the page would display the little lock at the bottom (well in IE). That was over 7 years ago, I have learned a lot since then.

Thanks for the info!
