Now, I am no network junkie so I really have no idea what I'm doing here.

I now have a 2mbps broadband connection happening next Thursday after waiting just over 5 years.

Anyway, I bought a Router recently namely the Linksys WRT54GS as I was under the impression that this would be used instead of a Modem. Kind of confused. :confused:

Hope someone can explain what I'm doing wrong. I have connected a standard ethernet cable from the ethernet adaptor in my PC to port number one on the router. The problem is that on the back of the router I was expecting the second ethernet cable to connect from the "internet" port (same RJ45) as ports 1 to 4 to the ADSL filter that arrived with the modem received from my ISP. But, you know whats coming. The port in the back of the filter is not an RJ45. It's not the standard phone connector but something similar to the RJ45!!

Do I just get an adaptor to convert the connector to the right type. Looking at the ADSL USB modem I received from the ISP there is no RJ45 connector on it so that tells me I don't need the modem right. This is doing my head in. Do I need this modem or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

;)

I posted this in GH also. Sorry I just need some help... :(

That really sucks. I absolutely hate ethernet over USB. I would ask them for a different modem than the one they've supplied to you with an ethernet port.

Once you get that, here's how to hook it up:

PCs-->port 1-4 WRT54g

WRT54g WAN port -->DSL modem ethernet jack

DSL modem RJ11 phone jack --> RJ11 DSL Phone filter

wok n woll.

edit: oh yea, if your DSL requires a username and password, enable PPPOE and enter username/password in the WRT54g control panel or else it won't even connect.

Thanks for the reply and the tip. I quickly identified that the router doesn't have amodem built in.

Quick question. When I bought the router I was under the impression this would be the modem also. My mistake as I didn't research it enough as it is only a router. so, is it -

1) Better to have a Router with a built in Modem.
2) Better to have a Router and a seperate Modem.

Are there any speed issues, reliability issues with either setup.

I'm kind of impatient and was just going to go out and get an internal DSL modem that I can connect to the router or is it better to have an external modem. Either way I could do with some modem recommedations. Thanks again. ;)

Modem/router models are very rare and IMHO not worth it. I would personally take the model and router couple anyday. That way it's also easier to troubleshoot problems.

I agree with "deathkoba" that internet thro' a DSL modem over USB is pathetic,. U have to keep the modem on when u boot your PC, otherwise you will have trouble seeking out an address from your ISP. A dlink or Linksys ADSL router would be the best. I am assuming that your broadband works over your PSTN or phone line. The phone jack on the wall connects to the ADSL line filter, from which one connection goes to your handset and the other plugs into your router. A patch cord connects the ADSL RJ45 port to the one on your Lan Card. This configuration is easy to set up. Sometimes to may have to key in the DNS nos. provided by your ISP. Hope this helps.

Thanks guyz. I already have the Router which is a Linksys WRT54GS. This requires a DSL modem, however, I do not want to connect the DSL modem via USB. I already have the modem a Speedtouch 330 which is a USB modem and was provided by the ISP. This means I would have to connect like this.

Filter (RJ11) --> Modem(RJ45) --> Router(RJ45) --> NIC.

I thought it might be better as there is less physical hardware if I connect like this.

Filter (RJ11) --> Router/Modem(RJ45) --> NIC. (I have a model in mind called the NetGear DG834GT) But, I need to do more research into this. Do you know of any trusted sites which reviews Routers etc?
