Really need help on setting up a wireless network

Well, we're finally getting DSL in my area! 😀

I've got two desktops at home, one upstairs and one downstairs. I want to network the two of them via a wireless network so both can use the DSL. Mine is downstairs, and the better half's is upstairs. Mine is also the more powerful of the two.

I have absolutely no experience at all with networking, so I could really use an assist here. What kind of Ethernet or NIC card should I get? And how do I go about hooking this up?

I'll make some hardware recommendatations, as the setup procedure is basically documented in the manuals:

1. SMC Barricade wireless router (Model: SMC7004AWBR)
2. 2 Orinoco Gold USB adapters (1 for each computer)

Basically, the DSL connects to the WAN port in the router and you're ready to go after installing the USB adapters and drivers and configuring the router via the instructions in the manuals.

Nighthawk, thanks for the info and suggestions! 🙂 Verizon says that the connection is scheduled for the 2d or 3d week in January - no more dial-up!. 😀

i just hooked up a similar thing in my home, with the same equipment. i suggest putting one computer on wired ethernet to the router and the other wireless. better bandwidth usage (and your dsl modem and router will probably be next to one computer or the other) The 1. SMC Barricade wireless router (Model: SMC7004AWBR) can handle up to three wired computers. the equipment that Nighthawk69 recommended is definitely the stuff to get but the diff is that you would need only one usb gold and one nic card. a good play to buy is necxdirect (which i think is gateway accessory store now)
