Really need help on hooking up a wireless network

Well, we're finally getting DSL in my area! 😀

I've got two desktops at home, one upstairs and one downstairs. I want to network the two of them via a wireless network so both can use the DSL. Mine is downstairs, and the better half's is upstairs. Mine is also the more powerful of the two.

I have no experience at all with networking, so I could really use an assist here. What kind of Ethernet or NIC card should I get? And how do I go about hooking this up?

You're going to get a Hub that supports wireless. I'm using a D-Link DI-731P that supports hardwired and wireless connections. Then you get wireless adapter for your computer in that far away place. They have USB ones, and PCI ones. Works great! Especially for when you are sharing internet connections. The gateway ( the hub ) will have all the info for your DSL server so that it still thinks it's one PC, and you won't have to setup all the DSL stuff of each computer. It also has a printer port on the hub so you can share it through the network without having to sacrifice performance from one of your PC's.

Thanks for the info, AkumaBao. 🙂 The connection is scheduled for sometime in January - can't wait! 😀

Good stuff. The D-Link DI-713P is offered at some really great prices now. I purchased the SMC 7004AWBR for $157 shipped off of ebay. It has a 3 port switch, which allows 3 hard lined computers to connect to it, and it also has support for a printer.

I have built in 802.11b, b what you will need is a PCMCIA wireless network card (, as well as a network interface card that accepts the PCMCIA network card. You'll most likely spend about $200 for the wireless router, and $200 for the PCMCIA card + Network Interface card that has a socket for the card. That's retail of course.
