I haven't formatted/reinstalled in awhile. I currently run WINXP on a 40 gb harddrive. I'm planning on formatting it and reinstalling everything on a 120 gb one. I was wondering if there was a special procedure to follow to "deactivate" my winxp key so I can reactivate it with my new harddrive.

you don't need to deactivate. you'll get a certain number of free Internet activates before you're forced to call in to the 1-800 number. if you intend to keep the install on the 40gb, just switch in a new key and you're good.

Make sure that you have you original Key number.

Install WinXP it would ask for the Key, put it in and finish the installation.

If you activated the original long time ago it might Reactivated without questions asked.

Otherwise you would have to do Phone Activation.

What would be the best way to transfer data from my old hd to the new one?

Install XP on your new one, slap in the old one as slave. Easiest and fastest transfers.

If its not a lot of data, burning a couple CDs/DVDs is probably the easiest way. Rewritable media is golden. 🙂

If it is a lot, you can connect up both HDs at once and transfer over the files you need.
