Really? I can't upgrade to Win8?

Where does it say it's can't? I see "can" and "may not" but that's about it. Interestingly, the last BIOS I saw for my ThinkPad said "support for Windows 8." Stuck me as funny. I wish they said what they put in there for such support, that it didn't already have.

Right here...

Not Supported
AMD Systems: G475, G575, S205, S206 (C50 CPU)
Intel Systems: G360, G460, G470E, G560, S100, S110, S100C, S200, Y480 (SSD+HDD), Y485 (SSD+HDD), Y580 (SSD+HDD)

Sorry I missed that. Have had my coffee since then. lol. They probably don't have the necessary windows 8 compatible driver out yet. That's my best guess anyway.

How old is your laptop? If I look up the model now there is no SSD option, interesting. I am wondering if a future BIOS update and possibly driver updates would fix this problem.

You can always give it a shot and see what happens. "Not supported" doesn't necessarily mean "will blow up your computer and steal your truck".😉

Judging from how specific they get on that list, it must have something to do with storage. Does that laptop have any special SSD caching feature or something similar?

Looking at this page

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073649

shows me that the latest BIOS is still calling for Windows 7, but the latest chipset driver is for Windows 8. If the chipset driver is indeed for Windows 8, I really don't know why it wouldn't work. But I will say that I don't understand what a Windows 8 BIOS update would do (if anything). I am wondering if they release a BIOS update when they have sufficient time to test the particular model.

Yeah, I believe there was something about certain system cache being on the SSD to make boot times faster.
Okay. It sounds like they're using Intel's Smart Response Technology. The boys in Memory & Storage say it works just fine on Windows 8 with the latest Intel RST drivers, so it sounds like you should be able to get it to work.

Worst case scenario is that you just can't make use of the SSD for the time being. Windows 8 will absolutely install though.

Nice find. So a guess the question turns into what is more important to you, tinpanalley: the speed of Windows 7 or the features of Windows 8?

I'm using Win8 Pro x64 with SSD+HD ie via SRT on my desktop PC(Asus Z68 board ) ,I do know Intel have released some new RST WIN8 drivers(I'm using latest 11.7.0 .1013) which I got from Intel website,I 'm guessing it should work with latest drivers.

Unfortunately, many of the laptops I have worked with are picky about getting drivers from the company putting their name on it.

it simply means they are not going to support it (you can't get upgrade media from them with drivers). you laptop uses 0 hardware devices by lenovo. Everything is either intel or some 3rd party. So it should work fine. If my 6 yrs old laptop designed for XP works on windows 8, yours should too.

I guess I need to read up more on why I might want it. I like the idea of a more streamlined desktop with tiles. But I don't want Windows suffering because of it.
So, are you saying that my SSD would be useless then? Because I'd love to just have it as storage.
This laptop is so fast and smooth. Everything is perfect with the exception of Assassin's Creed 3 which I couldn't get to run on it.

As near as we can tell Intel's SRT works just fine on Windows 8 with their latest drivers, so the Lenovo document would appear to be out of date. However we don't have the hardware in hand, so we can't make any promises.

But even if SRT doesn't work, you could still use it at a 32GB SSD.

Is there any info I could get for you guys from my laptop from System Info or something that would help you determine whether I can do this or not? I don't want to get through the process and delete everything and have it tell me that I can't finish the update.

At this point there's nothing left to do other than to try. All the data we have says it will work.

If you start the upgrade process from within Windows 7 you can uninstall (roll back to 7) if you are unhappy with the outcome.

Finally got an answer from Lenovo. Just thought you guys might be interested...

hi tinpanalley,

The reason why the Lenovo Y580 (SSD+HDD version with Windows 7 Preloaded) can't upgrade to Windows 8 is because the two drives are merged with the Lenovo Rapid Drive Technology as discussed here. You can still migrate to Windows 8 but you need to unlink the two drives first (you need to clean install Windows 8).

They also sent instructions.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to compatibility lists like that....it really boils down to drivers etc.

Windows 8 runs just fine and dandy on my old Thinkpad T60 w/ 4:3" display!
