Really gross factoid of the day

As many people know, ~70% of the world's population is lactose intolerant. Lactose is a naturally occuring sugar in dairy milk, and through evolution, many people who have not been exposed to dairy milk in their diets (Asians and Africans in particular) are unable to deal with the lactose in dairy products.

What happens is that the lactose goes intact, into the intestines where it causes gas, resulting pain and diarrhea, etc.

Well, the world record for the most "gas emissions" from a person goes to a man who was lactose-intolerant but decided to drink a "formidable amount" of dairy milk. The tremendous amount of gas in his intestines allowed him to produce 141 "gas emissions" in 2 hours.

Incredibly fascinating and incredibly useless as this fact is, you just might be able to impress a 7 year old boy with it;)

a friend of mine is going to try to drink a gallon of milk in an hour. Of course we will be video taping. Ahh... boredom at its worst.

What constitutes an emission? I would think a Cubic Foot measurement would be more accurate. Heck, 141 in 2 hours? Some bean dinners over the campfire have seen similar, but I don't know anyone who would start a count.

heheh Zapster,

I'm not sure what constituted an "emission". Quite frankly I can't believe somebody would voluntarily judge this contest...it must have stunk!

Where I got this factoid is from @discovery.ca. Click on the Joe the Chemist link for March 15th (it's not up yet as I saw this on TV but it should be up by tomorrow).

Yeah I think they are going to have to be more specific with the world record rather just going by "141 emissions".

For instance categorize by:

Volume
Rancidness
Explosiveness

Just a thought

That is the coolest thing I've ever heard. Ever.

Ever. Although I emit that much on a daily basis.

70%? What? I think in my lifetime I have come across like 3 of them.

I am still quite dubious of the record for emissions. Being a man, I think we are quite talented in controlling our air expulsions. I know I can break up one long one into several small ones (try riding a crowded subway car:) ). Does that count for one or several? Is there a minimum number of seconds in between each one for the next to count as a second?

piku,

The world doesn't revolve around us North Americans and neither does its population;) I thought the number was high too but if you count the population of Asia and Africa, as being largely lactose intolerant then it makes sense.

70% of the World is lactose intolerant

<< Lactose intolerance occurs when the activity of the milk enzyme lactase decreases after infanthood, resulting in an inability to digest milk sugar. While populations from Northern European decent have adapted well to dairy digestion, Native Americans, African-Americans, and Southeastern Asians have not. In fact, as high as 70% of the world's population is lactose intolerant. >>

As Joe the Chemist from the show said, through evolution, populations around the world who don't consume dairy products lost the ability to digest lactose, whereas populations where dairy milk was part of their diets retained that ability.

Hey yamahaXS

Is your wife embarrassed about letting them out?

If so, she will be really embarrassed when there are six people looking at her crotch in the maternity ward.

By the way, congratulations on your newest family member.

No way is 141 "gas emissions" a record! I have seen people on the Howard Stern show emit more than that in less than 5 minutes!

Well, I'll be 30 next month and I'm impressed. :)

Being lactose intollerant myself, I usually get my way at work by threatening co-workers that I'll drink milk and hang around the work area if I don't. Knowing the effect and that I'd actually ENJOY doing it...I tend to get my way, RIGHT AWAY.

My name's Palad, and I.... I.... <sniff> I'm lactose intolerant.

/hangs head

Seriously, I don't suffer from 'emissions' if I consume, I just get such severe stomach cramps it feels like someone is twisting a knife inside me. (Not that I'd know what that feels like...) :)
