In order to open a new gmail account, you have to have them send you a text. Why would you do that? People who do not want to receive texts will not do that...people who do not have cell phones can't do it...

Usually they do not require that. However if your IP has been linked to signing up for thousands of accounts, they start asking for phone numbers in order to prove the requests are legit.

Really? I opened an account 2 years ago for a job email address and I was not required to do that....

I've attempted to open an account twice and was prompted for a # each time... this was in two different states.

no, it's required. I tried at my house, my aunts house, and at work. Maybe our IP addresses have been floating around?

I know it first started as an anti-spoofed account measure and it was not security measure deployed to all users.

Edit: I'm not defending them if they indeed require it for all accounts, but it certainly was started as a reasonable countermeasure against guys creating 10s of thousands of accounts.
