Looking to building my first website.
Need something that will help someone who aint got a clue (me) build a site in a quickness.

Dont know if it matters but plan on hosting it myself. Win Server 2003.

Anyone else in here deal with servers and web hosting?
Be willing to teach a lost newby?

Yup, even if you have Dreamweaver or GoLive, it's good to know a little html.

yep knowing howto code HTML and probably a little bit about scripting languages is going to be your best tool.

Otherwise the easiest web editor that I know that is free is OpenOffice.org's office suite. Actually produces fairly clean code compared to MS Office. But there are lots and lots of others, most more capable.

Did everyone else read that last line as "with my pirated copy of windows server 2003", or was that just me?

It's just a given. ;)

Back to the question. If you just want to make a page and you don't want to learn anything then I'd suggest picking up Frontpage.

Hey, I was running Win2003 Server for a while. I didn't pay for it, and it wasn't a "pirated" copy. I may go back to it, can't seem to find an inexpensive copy of xp pro.

Most people make the mistake of thinking that the choice of the authoring program as the first step.

What software to use and knowledge of HTML or PHP is the last thing that you should worry about. There are many Software packages, many free and have templates and it is very easy to start a small pleasant looking site.

Example: DHE The Fast WEB Editor.

First make sure that you can create presence on the the Web then try few very simple things before you commit yourself to a big package like Front page or dream weaver.

When you look at the sites of people who publish while they are learning how to use a big complicated authoring program, the site looks like a Site of a Newbie and people shy away from it.

Once you have something simple going and you know were you are heading it is much easy to choose the right authoring program
