Really basic GPU OC questions

I am looking to try to OC my 5770 using the AMD Overdrive and am really confused with the numbers in front of me.

From the AMD Overdrive panel I see:
GPU Clock: 400
Memory Clock: 900 MHz

But then there's slider bars underneath that for:

High performance GPU clock settings:
850 MHz

High Performance memory clock settings:
1200 MHz

So are these numbers representing different things? I would have thought they should match. Firing up GPU-Z I get the same confusing information.

The first page (graphics card tab) states:
GPU Clock 850 MHz, Memory 1200 MHz
Default Clock 850 MHz, Memory 1200 MHz

But then the Sesnors tab shows:
GPU Core Clock 400 MHz
GPU Memory Clock 900 MHz

So are these values unrelated? I tried searching before asking but couldn't figure out what I'm looking at.

400/900 is the clocks in 2D mode with power saving features turned on. High Performance(850/1200) will be the speed when you start a 3D game or any program that takes advantage of the GPU.

This is also in the wrong section, might ask a mod to move it to the GPU subfourm.

I put it in here because this contains Overclocking and the first sticky talks about GPUs. Fine by me if it belongs somewhere else.

So when I do play games or run the GPU-Z render test, the sensor numbers don't change, nor do the values shown on the AMD Overdrive panel.

Do you have any kind of video open? Both Flash or videos being played back using DXVA will lock the speeds to the lower levels even during 3D use. You could also try using Afterburner to enable Unofficial Overclocking which will disable PowerPlay and have the card run at 3D speeds full time.

I will start with just rebooting my computer after work and seeing if that does anything. If that doesn't do it I might re-install my drivers before I unlock anything.
