I just built a computer using an ECS K7S5A motherboard and athlon 1700+ (1.47ghz). I flashed the BIOS with an overclocking version and bumped RAM and FSB to 147mhz so I'm now running at 1.61ghz. I decided to see what my seti time was so I let it go overnight, I came back this morning and it was only 75% done after 12 1/2 hours! Whats the deal? My 333mhz iMac can do better then that! (well....no but it can get 16 hours).

Could it be because im using SDRAM instead of DDR at the moment? I know it makes a difference but it shouldn't make THAT much of a difference.

I have a K7S5A with a 1600+ (OCed to 1.5) with 512 of PC133. I get about 4:15/WU.

Are you running the GUI/screensaver client or the CLI? What OS are you using? Maybe you just got a really weird WU....

Im running the normal client/sreensaver under Windows XP pro. Yea I should be in the 4 hour range, and 3 hour range when I get some DDR.

Are you running the client or the screensaver they aren't the same if you are running the sreensaver your times will be slow. The client version doesn't have a screensaver and is much faster.

Now you've put that "kyptonite laced GUI Client" in it's proper lead-shielded container (trash) you'll start showing us what you can really do with that rig. 🙂

I'm curious, I too have an ECS K7S5A running an 1800+ XP @ only 138 FSB. Haven't been able to get it as high as you have your 1700+ XP. What cooler are you using and which BIOS? I don't think cooling is my problem for MBM is reporting a chilly 41C.

BTW, I have DDR2100 memory and I'm averaging 3Hrs 27Mns

DDR Memory makes a big difference. Just built another 1800+ XP on an Asus A7V333 with DDR2700 which is running at nominal FSB right now and turning in average times of 3Hrs 16Mns

And most importantly, I can't find your name on our TeAm Roster? Have you joined yet?

smokeball. I just finished my first unit in 3 hrs 48min. I bumped up my FSB to 150mhz this morning and am now running at 1.65ghz. I got my BIOS update from herehere the code for it is chb0325l.zip. I hope to get some DDR soon, but prices are just too high at the moment. I just got a $20 generic copper HSF from CompUSA that is rated up to 2ghz. With the side of my case on and no case fan I get up to 62 C at 100% load. If I take the side off it goes down to about 58. I orderd a new case with a 2 fans which will help a lot, at the moment I have a window fan pointing to my case, it brings the temp down 10 C! lol.

But I hope to get some PC2700 DDR for around $50 for 256 soon, which should help the performance of my machine a lot.

also, since I got this board, windows XP takes a LONG time to start up. Once its up everything is really fast, but I can't figure out why my startup times are bad.

right now I'm set at 150mhz/150mhz. There is also i think 136mhz, 138mhz, 143mhz, 146mhz, and 163mhz. Then it goes up to 200. But I can't boot at 200 ;-).

Well, let me put that on my "todo" list. The BIOS I'm using goes 133, 138, 150, and up. Too big of a jump to 150. Thanks. 🙂

Could just be a really active unit - my XP proc turns out WU's every 4hrs or so; I had a few recently that took about 7hrs. SetiSpy indicated that there were loads of Pulses, spikes, triplets, etc, so that brough efficiency way down.
Also get CPUID and maybe Sandra to look at CPU information, and also to run CPU and memory benchmarks to see what's holding you down.
Maybe also try a non-hacked BIOS; perhaps there's something wrong with the BIOS you have now that's keeping your proc running either inefficiently, or not at full speed.
