Really Annoying Power Supply Problems

First off, let me say that I'm new and this is my first post. I've heard this community if like the creme of the crop for technical issues, so here goes:

allright so on my old computer, I was running these specs:

Soyo mobo (forget exact model K7----something)
AMD XP 1800+ chip
WD 80gig hd 7200rpm
gf4 ti4200 128mb ddr (manual says needs at least a 300watt power supply and that it supports higher wattage)
384mb ddr ram
16pci soundblaster live
10/100 ethernet card

All this was powered by a 300watt power wupply. After about 6 months the computer would start to randomly turn off or restart itself. I later deemed that this was due to the powersupply failing. Finally, about 2months later, the power supply totally broke. When I tried to turn it on it would just make this high pitched whining noes, and nothing would spin.

So I went out and bought a 350watt power supply without knowing whether or not the board supported it, but assuming that it did. Installed it and everything ran great for about 2 and a half hours. Then the motherboard would no longer start up. When I turned the power supply on, the fans would spin but the board would not beep. Now, I never figured out if this was because the power supply was too powerful, of if it was just a coincidence that the mobo broke a couple of hours after installing the new and more powerful power supply.

Ok so I bought a new barebones system with these specs:

ECS K7S5A PRO mobo
AMD XP 2000+ chip
Maxtor 30gig hd 7200rpm (I think.)
gf4 ti4200 128mb ddr (manual says needs at least a 300watt power supply and that it supports higher wattage)
640mb ddr ram
16pci soundblaster live
10/100 ethernet card

Powered by a 300watt power supply. Set it up and it ran beautifully for about 3 hours. I was in the middle of a desert combat game when the computer suddenly turned itself off. Upon pulling the cause out of my desk (the case cover was off), I noticed that the tower was very hot. Once again, the 300watt powersupply has broken (except this time it took 2 hours instead of 7 months) When I turn it on, the fan jerks for a split second and then it makes that high pitched squeely sound.

Now, how did this happen? Did it overheat and break? or was it just not powerful enough to begin with and broke trying to put out enough wattage? More importantly. what should I do? Should I buy a 300watt power supply or 350 watt power supply? I read through the mobo manual and couldn't find anything on what the max wattage the board supports is. I checked consumer posts online and found that peope have been very successful using 350 - 400watt powersupllies with this board. The reason I'm asking you all is to get primary source information and to see if you can think of any combatibility errors with my peripherals that might be attributing to the pwer supply problems. Please help this is really aggravating me.

Thanks.

Now, I never figured out if this was because the power supply was too powerful....

Not possible.

Have you gone through 3 power supplies?

As for power supply suggestions, you could probably even run a 250 watt or maybe even a 200 watt. BUT it depends if it a no-name brand or a quality brand power supply. If you been buying no-name brand (especially the same one) that could be part of the power supply failures. Antec, Enermax(spelling?), and Sparkle come to mind that are quality power supplies. It is highly recommened that you get one of these, and 300 watt or 350 watt will definitely do you fine.

On another note, you might also want to invest in a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) and make sure it also acts as a line conditoner. You might be getting "bad" power causing these power supplies to die.

can a lower-then-recommended power supply have any negative effects on my board? and yeah, I've gone through 3 power supplies.

The most I've seen would be stability issues, not dying motherboards.
