Really annoying: MSN Messenger 6 deletes my Display Picture

It seems every time I reboot my PC, MSN Messenger deletes my Display Picture (the 96x96 icon). I have to browse for it every time I start my machines. It seems is not saving it. I don't know if the picture is always stored locally or somewhere in the MSN universe.

I'm using ver. 6.0.0602, wich is the final release, with a custmized GIF images as Display Picture.

This is very irritating!!!

Especially if you originally had the unofficial leaked build, or the official "Preview" build, some bugs are bound to happen for certain machines.

Best way to start troubleshooting is with a clean install....perhaps a clean install will even alleviate your problems.

1) Uninstall MSN Messenger via Add/Remove Programs
2) Delete the MSNMessenger regkey from HKCU\Software\Microsoft
3) Delete the MSN Messenger folder from C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Microsoft
- for downlevel, this folder is located in C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft
4) Install MSN Messenger fresh

Yes, you lose every customization, but that all easily restored.

Other info that would be helpful is whether or not other people use your machine, if you sign in with more than one Passport, which ISP you use, if there is more than one ISP used on your machine, etc.

hrm... I'm going to follow the same instructions but not reinstall it 🙂 I hate this damn program!

AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!! I think I figured out why...

You're occassionally cleaning up your machine, and deleting every single TMP file you can find...correct?

Display Pics are essentially "stored" as TMP files in c:\documents and settings\<username>\application data\microsoft\msn messenger\<10-digit number>\usertiles.

If you delete these particular TMP files, you also delete your display pics.

You're a genious!!! Yes, SuperCleaner deletes every .tmp file found. I'm gonna put that folder in the exclusion list. Now I have to restore the original display pictures and backgrounds.

Thanks a lot for your help!

<gush>

One more helpful hint: don't exclude just the UserTile folder. The Backgrounds and CustomEmoticons folders also use TMP. Furthermore, if more than one person uses that machine...or if you use more than one Passport account for Messenger...I would recommend to simply exclude c:\documents and settings. Very few (if any) unwanted temporary files ever get written to this tree.
