I can not get my mouse to work.
I ran scandiskm surface scan to fix a possibly damaged sector, which turned out not to be damaged, then I installed an external USB zip drive and the next time I rebooted, my mouse didn't work.

The computer detects the mouse but it says there is a problem with that device. It can not "load Vmouse VXD". To fix the problem run Windows 98 setup. Which I have done, which does not fix the problemp.
Note: I have Win98 2nd edition.

The mouse will work while setup is running, but does not work after setup is finished.
I have tried it with both PS2 and serial mice.
I have uninstalled the zip drive and it still doesn't work.
Any suggestions, I am stumped.

I have a pentium 400mhz, processor, 30gig HD. I have tried it with a Microsoft PS2 wheel mouse, and a generic 3 button serial mouse. i have installed and uninstalled each each mouse numerous times.

The zip drive was a brand new Iomega USB Zip100.

Hmmm....

Go into the Device Manager. Is your mouse detected? Does it have a conflict? If it is detected, remove the driver and reboot.

If it asks for a driver, choose the Standard PS/2 mouse...worry about the scroll function later...hopefully this will work.

If yer still getting the Vmouse.vxd error, find the file and delete it....then reboot....

Still doesn't work? Install the Intellimouse driver software (should have a diskette or CD that came with your mouse, or just download it from microsoft.com). Reboot.

Finally....Did your mouse EVER work? :)

Good Luck!

A comment from a friend:

I believe he tried most of what you suggested. And yes, his mouse did work. It only stopped working after the zip install.
