Seriously, all the games xbox has PS2 has with more choices. xbox only has better graphics, which can be argued but that's it. It's really BBOX for (boring)box.

I agree. XBOX only has two exclusive must have games, Star Wars and Halo, both of which are coming to the PC very soon. PS2 is much better.

KOTOR
MechAssault
Halo
Buffy
Rallisport 2
NBA Street 2
Splinter Cell
Burnout 2
Brute Force
MGS 2: Substance
Soul Caliber 2
Morrowind

Coming soon:
Ninja Gaiden
Fable
BC
True Crime

Xbox has its gems. Just a lot fewer of them than on the PS2.

xbox blows.

I built an HTPC/Emulation computer, its the same size if not smaller than the xbox, and cheaper yet faster.

You can plug PS2/Xbox/Gamecube controllers through a USB adapter, and you can play the games for all three systems. YOu just have to buy the real gtame and use the emulator.

As a semi-casual gamer, who enjoys sports, racing, and FPS games, the PS2 doesn't come close to the XBox as far as I can see.
Live is so simple and integrated, I doubt you can refute PS2's inferiority in the online department as well.

I wasn't even aware PS2/Gamecube/Xbox emulators exist.

Please elaborate on how you built a HTPC for under $180, I've been thinking about building one and one that'd cheap would definatly be doable.

They don't exist. And might never exist. Emulation is very complicated.

But, speaking of emulation. That's all the XBOX is good for. XBOX emulation on PC is near, but you can already play all your favorite old-skool games on the XBOX. There's even a PSX emulator :)

I bought most of the parts here on anandtech FS/FT.

AMD Athlon 900 = 20$
Sapphire A3-M275 mATX motherboard(onboard tv-out) = 45$
Kingston 256mb PC2100 = 25$
Seagate 10gb XBOX harddrive = 20$ (straight out of an xbox, extremely quiet)
Heatsink lying around + halfpowered fan = free + quiet
case = AOpen H340H as seen here
^^this case really kicks ass, those drive covers are like real covers, you press the button the the dvd player pushes it open.
NIC = Free after rebate from any store. Sadly the version of the MOBO i had did not have onboard lan.
Sound = Onboard
Video = Radeon 7000, which is pretty good for onboard.

Its hooked up on the network so I just play all the divx/xvid/svcd/anime off my comp, same goes with snes, ps, ps2 emulation. Xbox isn't quite there yet, and gamecube might never be. But hey, a PS2 that rocks the world and plays SNES and PS and all the movies i want, including rented DVDs ON MY TV, is badass.

Pretty cool, I like that case. I'd want more than a network streaming appliance, but still, even with a 100gb drive it'd be a relativly cheap system.

Time to hit up FS/T :D

I just got back from 12-player Halo via 4 TVs and 4 Xboxes last night. Halo in CTF is godly. :)

NHL 2K3 is a total blast too...I can't believe I lost in overtime. Toronto vs. NJ, they scored on a rebound using a behind the back shot that I HAD NO IDEA WAS EVEN PROGRAMMED INTO THE GAME! :p

MechAssault is fantastic, but only 2 players per Xbox. Bah humbug. :)

While we mostly alternated between the above 3 games, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Brute Force were also good fun. MotoGP is just too damn hard to pick up quickly. Fusion Frenzy was a surprise hit. :)

I join with the nays.

You had me in stitches there, my friend. Ok, not really.. that was lame as hell.

The cool thing about the Xbox that makes me want one is all the possibilities for other uses it has. My PS2 can't emulate without a boot disk and a mod chip, and it can't play DivX files over a network. An Xbox can do so, and more. And it's real easy to put awesome new dashboards on there that let you do cool things such as, uhh.. save money. :Q

Why can't both just exist in peace?

Emulation for the current generation of console machines is new news to me. Even for XBox, which would theoretically be the easiest one to emulate on a PC.

Actually, the xbox has more than better graphics...
  • In-game 5.1 DD Surround sound
  • MUCH better (broadband only) online system
  • Built in HD
  • Built in ethernet port
  • Built in 4 controller support
  • Better HDTV support
As for the games, it's all personal preference. Btw... What games on the PS2 do you like?

fumbduck, that's a nice HTPC you have. But you forgot to add the cost of the DVD drive and OS into the mix. (Is emulating the PS2 even legal?) And even still... I doubt that PC will run Splinter Cell or KOTOR as well as the Xbox does.

If he's saying he has a working PS2 emulator he's full of crap. There are no working PS2 emulators out there. There's one that can SOMETIMES make it to the "PlayStation 2" screen when a game boots but most hang right after that, or never make it that far. In the rare occasion a game might be accessed, people average around 3fps or so.

The broadband system isn't that much better, IMO. It's more of the game developers fault than Sony's fault on that one. The good thing about the Xbox is that the ethernet is integrated as opposed to needing an add on for the PS2. The EA sports games are fun as hell to play online though :)

The way I see it, the Xbox has way more potential and power, but the PS2 has the actual games, even though most of the big ones end up going to both consoles anyways. I like RPG's though, so it wasn't hard for me to see Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Star Ocean, etc etc and go for the PS2.

There's so much good stuff on each console I don't see why there's even a debate though :p

DVD drive was 25 off FS/FT.

AS for the Operating System, I have several friends that go to UT, so WindowsXP Pro costs me 5$, NFR OEM though.

and in response to TastyCakes

I do have a PS2 emulator, i have not tried it as i dont own any PS2 games, it is on the computer. Mostly i use it as a HTPC, but I have used it to play SNES with a cordless keyboard, on my TV, it kicked ass. I pretty much almost prefer a keyboard to a controller, just depends on the game.
