Reality Show Seeks New Singer For INXS
The man who brought "Survivor" and "The Apprentice" to the airwaves is looking to rock out with his latest reality television venture.
Mark Burnett's production company announced Monday that "Rock Star" will find a new lead singer for the Australian band INXS. The band's former lead singer, Michael Hutchence, died in 1997 of an apparent suicide.
"After Michael died, we wanted to search the world for a new singer but didn?t know how we could effectively do that," INXS member Tim Farriss said in a statement from Mark Burnett Productions. "By having Mark and everyone at MBP embrace the concept, we've now found a fantastic way to make that happen."
The winner of the competition will record an album with INXS. The group's members -- Andrew, Tim and Jon Farriss, Kirk Pengilly, and Garry Beers -- will work with leading entertainment industry specialists to assess contestants as they undertake a series of comprehensive workshops covering everything from songwriting and performance to image and production, according to the production company.
MBP added that the show would not be entirely decided by the viewers.
In 25 years, INXS has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.
"I am a longtime fan of INXS and feel very fortunate that INXS approached us with this idea and have entrusted us with their future," Burnett said.
Burnett added that he thought there was room for more than one great music show on the airwaves. The network that will air "Rock Star" is yet to be determined.
He said that "rock music has been totally left out of that mix" of reality shows and that "Rock Star" is the "perfect aspirational show."
