Realistically, what kind of engine can you fit in a DeLorean?

The flux capacitor kind.

Or, the Mr. Fusion kind in just a year or so from now.

Why? It's a butt ugly car. The only appeal it has is it's rarity, and the movie tie in.

iirc, the engine casing was designed in such a way to more efficiently store kilo bricks of cocaine. not really designed to easily swap engines.

;)

Isn't it a mid-engine car? If so........ not many.

IIRC, about 5 years ago there was a company selling them for $30k after replacing the crummy 140hp (110 w/ catalytic) engine with a nice 200+ DOHC. Would be nice to have one of those, but getting in and out in parking lots might be a PITA.

You could fit a gasoline internal combustion engine for sure, since those are standard.
You could fit a small steam engine.
You could fit a sterling engine, though I'm not sure you would want to.
You could fit a diesel internal combustian engine.

I'm sure there are many others too!

It had a 2.8-liter V6 generating 130bhp, which is crap for the engine capacity.

I would hazard a guess that you could improve the power substantially, whilst retaining a physically similar sized engine. Maybe use turbo- or super-chargers.

Link to stats:
http://exoticcars.about.com/od/guidedtours/p/DeLoreanProfile.htm

The Engine generated 170HP, but adding a catalytic converter sucked 40HP out. European versions don't have the catalytic and will do 0-60 in about 8.5-8.8 seconds. That's not bad at all for the body being made of stainless freakin steel.

Even then, the 130HP version will still do 0-60 in 10 seconds. That's not terrible.

There's a twin turbo edition, but it's ridiculously rare.

Edit: I fixed it, so stop telling me :p

Good point.

The Delorean Motor Company in Texas bought the rights & spare parts to the car:

You can currently get a 197hp motor upgrade on a zero-mile crate engine (the "Stage 2" upgrade). Don't know when Stage 3 is coming out. I've heard of at least one person putting a Northstar V8 in their Delorean:

But I'd go with the Delorean.com engine upgrade - they have all the stuff figured out for the upgrade so it's ready to go without any hassle.

The doors actually require less room to open than conventional doors do, it's a neat design.

Bahahah, how? With rocket boosters? I think you have the 0-60 times mixed up with quarter mile times. ~10 second quarter mile is Veyron speed, and that thing has 1000hp.

Quarter mile times for a Delorean are probably lurking in the 17-18 second range.

You have to remember that in 1979 when that engine was designed 170HP from a 2.8L V6 was respectable, 5 and 6 liter V8s were making only slightly more at the time.

My bad. Yes. I'll correct it in a sec. I'm easily confused at the moment: multitasking like a motherfucker.

The engine put out 170HP, not 130. It's the same engine in Europe that was sold here.
