It depends entirely on the game. I am not a fan of the cartoony look, but at the same time Team Fortress 2 is my favorite multiplayer game, go figure. I do however hate blocky cartoon graphics (ala warcraft) with a passion, and I will never like it no matter how good the game may be.

I don't really care either way as long as the game is fun. I've played good and bad variations of both styles and gameplay always wins out (I'm looking at you Crysis!! :thumbsdown🙂.

It totally depends on the game. I enjoy more realistic shooters, or at least realistic looking, but I LOVE 2d fighters. I really don't pay huge attention to graphics though, it is all about gameplay.

Depends. I loved TF2 when it first came out (still love it, just don't have time for it) because there were just too many hyperrealistic shooters out there. The cartoons worked for me. Then I got me some fine BF:BC2 action and that was hyper-realistic and that worked for me too. TF2 will have me laughing out loud, often maniacally, because the action is just so over-the-top some times. BF:BC2 will have my pulse up and adrenaline pumping because it is intense in an entirely different way. I enjoy both things, depending on my mood.

Quality of the game play/ story > then the graphics.
Hence why I gave up on SC2, Graphics great, The game play blows.

"Realistic versus Cartoonish" should be an artistic choice of the designers, and part of the means by which they convey the "feeling" of the game.

If it's a Fun game, we'll play it.

Depends on the game. That being said, while I enjoy realistic looking games a lot, in the long run I tend to like cartoonish more simply because cartoonish holds up better with age and I tend to play a lot of older games and go back to games quite a bit.

Cartoon always for me, because even the most realistic looking games don't look close to realistic to me. XIII & TF2 looking games rock.

I voted animated because I still play LoL more than anything else. That said, I really don't care as long as the story and controls are good.

Hate to just repeat what everyone else has said, but it really does depend on the game, whether the graphics style matches the gameplay, and whether the gameplay is good. I really loved the Borderlands graphics, especially since it just goes so well with the action in the game. I also like games with more realistic art style like CoD and Crysis though.

I have an odd twist on this. I used to love FPS games, kind of in between real and cartoony, however years ago when I got called to go overseas, when I came back, I had a hard time playing any FPS - especially the more realistic "war" like ones which had become extremely popular. They just didn't feel right in my stomach. That's my own personal issue... I don't really have the issue now, but I also dont' find the newer FPS' nearly as fun as the old ones...

How about both. I like a variety of art styles because if every game is realistic or cartoony you get tired of it. I like a change of scenery every now and again.

whichever has better gameplay

i could not care less about the graphics

The style of the art is always going to affect the gameplay because your brain processes the action in the game through your vision (and hearing).

It depends on the game type which I prefer. For fantasy RPGs I like fantasy art style, like Everquest.
I don't like Disney cartoony like WoW or pure realistic style.

For sciifi and modern games I like realistic. TF2 is great though and the cartoony graphics fit.
