Just got back from a tournament where my son had a most excellent day! Shooting from a balcony about 40' from one mat, and 60' from the other, I managed to snag some nifty shots, with the aging F707. The HVL-F1000 flash has some serious reach, which was needed. Most shots were full 5X zoom, 1/80s, F2.4 @ ISO 200.

The whole season, I've been shooting video, instead of using my digicam, which I prefer. Today, I stuck the camcorder on a tripod, and got to use the camera. It was a bit of a challenge, but I've got a handle on it now. Maybe next week I can get down closer to the mat, and capture some tight grimacing shots! :p

He's the one dominating in the last several shots. I took a helluva lot more pictures, but they all start to look the same after a while.

It's his first year wrestling. He's at 142lbs class, 7th grade. I have NO idea why he wanted to bother with it. It's a LOT of work and commitment. I guess mostly it's just to keep fit for football...

Indeed. Grapling with some sweaty guy in a leotard and a water polo helmet just isn't my idea of fun.

I always did want to go to a practice though because I was told that they were harder than football practice. Not sure I buy that. Never got a chance to try it though because football and wrestling were going at the same time at my school.

I don't think "aggressive fondling" is an apt description of the sport.

Wrestling practice was alot harder than anything I have been into. I did football, wrestling and martial arts. I was going for varsity line backer when I was only a freshman.

The whole 'rolling around with sweaty guys' thing is said by pencil necks or benchwarmers usually. The idea is one of domination plus wrestling skills are excellent in street fights as evidenced now by all the 'grappling' / 'shoot' fighting schools opening up thanks to XFC and the like.

It's obvious most of you making comments have never wrestled, nor ever will for fear that you lack of manliness will be fully exposed. :D

Wrestling is essentially a controlled fight. It is quite possibly one of the most challenging sports you can participate in. I never knew a football, basketball, baseball or swimmer who could handle an entire 3 hour wrestling practice session unless they were also a wrestler. I'd venture to say that a wrestler, pound for pound, can be competitive physically in any sport if he/she is in shape to wrestle. I plan on coaching at the high school level sometime soon.

I wrestled in highschool.
It was probably the toughest sport that I've done.
The conditioning/practice session was a definitely killer :) But once you got used to it, it was all good.

I played offensive/defensive tackle in school so I completely understand the satisfaction of physically dominating someone. Wrestling just doesn't strike me as an appealing way to do it. *shrugs*

Go pick a fight with someone in your weight class in the wrestling room, wait until match day so they are wearing a jacket with the class on it :) Make sure they are varsity.

The football guys used to start crap with both the wrestling team and martial arts club at my HS....

The worst altercations would happen after practice when everyone was waiting for the activity bus.

The best one was sending this one guy down about 10 steps (250lb something something on our varsity line)...he was 'karate' chopping one of the black belts cars in the gym parking lot. It was a cool exchange that lead up to the event, it was hilarious actually.

Finally the football guy got ticked and rush up the step to the gym. They danced for a little bit and bam! thump thump thump thump thump thump. Most of us had to catch the bus, but he needed to be taken in an ambulance (severe concussion). Once he recovered, he wanted to know how to 'do that'. Sort of after that event the crap slinging stopped.

I really don't understand most of what you just typed. I'm guessing the gist of it is that a 250lb lineman got his ass kicked by a black belt so badly that he had to go to the hospital? Really, why are you telling me this though? I didn't say wrestlers or martial arts guys (how the hell did they get into this discussion by the way?) weren't tough. I just said wrestling wasn't something that appealed to me. You don't need to tell me who kicked who's ass because that's not the point anyway. At least it wasn't my point.

Jesus but this thread is off in the middle of nowhere. Sorry Ornery.

I've got nothing but respect for anybody willing to go through the grueling wrestling rigors, just to stay in shape, or the short lived glory once per week. It wasn't worth it to me back in school. I played football, which was almost fun, but passed on wrestling.

So, what about the picture quality? I was almost as happy with that, as my son's performance! :p But seriously, when I walked into this gym, and saw where I'd have to sit, I figured I might as well just leave the camera packed up. Now, I'm glad I gave it a shot!

do you have basic comprehension skills? also you were the one that really brought this thread off track with your total lack of understanding of what wrestling is....pairing that up with you are supposedly a football player, almost all I have known knew that wrestling wasn't just two guy rolling around.

Yes the thought of getting in a singlet (tiny thing eh!?) and rolling around on the mat with someone. putting your hand between there legs is well test your manhood at best !
rolleye.gif

anyway. i was in football (ok just freshmen/sophomore year i was to small!) wrestling team (varsity all 4 years 103, 112 and FINALLY! 119 class). i have to say it was the hardest practice out of all the sports i was in.

Go push against a wall hard as you can for 5 minutes and Let me know how you feel. While its not the same as a match it pretty close to it. Your are against someone your size. You may be stronger then them or faster but it is not going to be by much. Its a great one on one competition.

the shots were pretty clear. not bad for the camera. what MP is it? or is it a real film camera?

Get a camcorder. you and your son will be happy with it. My mother (my dad was to busy to come to most of my matches bah!) taped all of mine. She still has tapes of me at 10-20 wrestling. she also has some from when i played football ( i want to tape over those! i sucked!). Its kinda of neat to watch them. Gosh i was a small little freak in high school!

I've got every one of his football games on tape. Gave a copy to his coach after every game, as well as a highlights tape to every member of the team in the city league. I only gave a highlight tape to the closer friends on the junior high team.

Every wrestling match has been taped, but I haven't given copies to the coaches for that. I didn't think they'd need it, like the football coaches would.

I used the camera to shoot as much as possible during those practices and games. I'd shoot the parents, coaches, cheerleaders and try to capture the whole atmosphere. Looking back, I can't believe how much they've grown already. Some may be future stars, you never know. One of my favorite shots, was of this little guy who played cornerback. Man, he was small, but he would tear your offense up! I caught this image during the talk, at the end of a game they lost: 2MB original.

Wrestling is a focking hard spot. Not easy and the training and stamina needed is crazy.

I'd wish I could have wrestled but in England it isn't very well received....

Nice pics Onery.

Thanks Koing.

I seem to remember you kicking around buyin the 707 or 717. Did you get one? Today's the last day to take advantage of the $100.00 rebate. You should be able to buy it for about $600.00 (US), and take the $100.00 off of that. It's a discontinued camera, and it's replacement (F828) has some issues, so it's a pretty darn good deal. IMO.

Å

Again, what does a sports difficulty have to do with who could kick who's ass? Not to mention what do martial arts students have to do with anything? Ect.. I have the comprehension problem? Think first. Then speak.

Also, if you'll actually try to read you'll realize that I was just agreeing with what someone said before me. I didn't take the first shot at wrestling. You just chose to start arguing with my post and not his. Once again, comprehension.

Lastly, I'm not a football player. I used to play but I'm out of school now so... comprehension.

I'll be done train wrecking this thread now. If you have some other response that addresses nothing that you'd like me to read just shoot me and PM and I'll be happy to listen.
