Real Vs Fake Christmas Tree

So my girlfriend, daughter and I just bought our first tree, it's a Scotch Pine and makes the living room smell great, not sure why we waited so long to get one, was great being able to go out to the local tree farm, pick one out and cut it down, beats the crap out of my tree in a box, 🙄😉

I prefer artificial. I find it wasteful to cut down a perfectly healthy tree just for a month or two.

Though nothing beats the smell of a real one though. Which reminds me I should go cut a couple branches from a real tree so I can put them in the house.

A "real dead" tree definitely smells better, but the mess from fallen needles and drips of sap are a PITA...plus, you never know what kind of critters you MIGHT bring in the house with the tree. (I've personally seen several kinds of insects, spiders, and even rodents in cut Christmas trees.)

When cutting a tree one year, a bat fell in front of me and scared the shit out of me :^D

I'd never consider anything but a real tree aside from tabletop novelties. I like my little fiberoptic lit tree for something interesting to look at.

We quit buying "real dead" trees when we bought our house in 99. Took some convincing to get me to buy an artificial tree...but now, I won't even consider anything else.

Don't forget to water it, and make sure you use LED lights, not the "normal" ones, since those have less chance of causing a fire.

I was a real tree guy until I got married, my wife starts sneezing around the real ones. Boy, I'll never go back! Zero mess, easy to decorate, no sap, no water. Kind of wish I had bought a pre-lit one for even less work each year 😀

For 12 years we have cut a tree at a tree farm across the road, owned by a German family that has been on the land since the late 1700's. But every year the kids are less and less enthusiastic about going, and every year the tree is dead by the week after Christmas and dropping needles. This year my wife said "Enough" and bought a high-quality fake. It looks real-enough, and she stuck some pine sticks in there so it smells good. But it's built a little tight for hanging ornaments. That's probably my only real issue with it.

Do you live out in the country somewhere?

Live tree with root ball to be planted.

Nothing like having a Live tree if you have the space. Its really nice for the family to grow up with your christmas trees.

Just dig the hole before the ground freezes.

Sort of suburban-rural. We're on the very edge of the NYC commuter radius in northwestern NJ. Lots of farms, with Toll Brothers developments in between where the farmers sold out.

I have hardwood floors so I'm not worried about the sap or needles, easy cleanup, ya I grew up with a real tree each year then had to switch to artificial when I moved into an apt, now that I have my own house, I want to start the tradition again with a real one

Real tree. We used to have a fake one but it was always a PITA to store. My dad has hoarder tendencies so there's literally no room in the garage or the basement. We've looked at the newer artificial trees but they're really chintzy looking for what you pay for them. There's a guy that sells the fresh cut ones at a local plaza here in town. Hauls them up from Quebec. Been going to him for years. Never had a bad tree from there.

This.

I too find it wasteful to cut down a tree for just a few weeks of pleasure.
If i would have a garden i would plant a tree in it and use that tree as my Christmas tree. Since i have a balcony, i decided two years ago for the next best thing and bought a tiny conifer tree in a large pot. Unfortunately it died two months after i bought it. :|

I also miss the smell of a real tree. But i have chosen for an artificial one.

I don't know that it's very destructive. Wasteful isn't a useful adjective. Almost everything humans do is is wasteful. It comes down to being destructive or harmful. Real trees usually come from tree farms where they filter water, reduce erosion, and improve air. They get cut for Xmas, and new trees get put back. If they weren't growing trees, a more destructive use of the land might be there instead.

I always cut wild trees, and it's one of many. They replenish themselves, and me cutting them causes virtually zero collateral damage. When I'm finished, they go into the yard, and return to the earth.

I guess your right. For me it is just easier to get a huge box full of Christmas stuff from storage and rebuild and decorate it.

Every year the discussion comes up to buy a fake tree, and every year I ignore that discussion and go cut down a real tree. It's fun, and the tree is always imperfect which makes it all that much better! By chance cut down a Norway Spruce from the tree farm this year, no needle droppage at all, doubt even a half-dozen fell getting it through the front door. Tradeoff this tree apparently does not have a pine scent, not even a faint one. It's okay, it looks spectacular standing in the living room!

We used to buy pre-cut trees at a lot in town until several years ago when we got the tree set up in the house we noticed it was spray-painted green! Been cutting them down from tree farms ever since.

The wife finally convinced me to go fake a couple of years ago. With 13 foot ceilings bringing home a 10+ ft. tree every year became a pain.
