REAL VoIP...what is it?

It's "real" enough for most home uses.

It's certainly not on par with the six digit systems from Nortel, Avaya, Cisco, ect when it comes to commercial grade VoIP though.

Who cares about semantics?

The point is, it works great for voice AND data and it's DIRT CHEAP.

Why the fsck would you quibble after knowing that?

vonage uses hardware and software from Cisco to run it's network. The hardware and software that it uses is based on Vovida, an open source VOIP implementation that Cisco purchased a few years ago.

Right and that's probably what he's talking about and I'd like to learn more about it.

because its not real voice over IP.

real voice over IP is a quality system that delivers exactly the same quality and features of a PBX and more.

Ever used VoIP? The only hiccup is E911 service, which depends on A) Your proper configuration of it and B) The dispatch center having equipment that isn't decades old

heh, yeah. I build their networks all the time.

the vonage is nothing more than VoIP to the edge, it still gets to a regular PBX AFAIK. Its kinda the toll bypass model instead of full blown voice over IP phone with all the associated features.

-edit- although it is getting very close. I "believe" the speculation is packetized voice will surpass "regular" voice in 2009.

Because Vonage isn't VoIP. Vonage is pure, unadultered suckage with a VoIP sticker on it. AT&T is worlds apart and puts my Verizon landline to shame in terms of cost, features, voice quality and ***STABILITY*** (My phone line is out at least 2 days a month and Verizon refuses to fix it because they can't find a problem, my internet is NEVER out)

And yeah, commercial VoIP is quite awesome.

sounds like that problem is call setup protocols. That or they are constantly mucking with their voice servers.

No, the Verizon problem is the fact that the weather shielding on my pair doesn't exist somewhere between here and the CO. The line likes to dial 911 by itself when it gets wet, too. The cops aren't happy when they get rousted from their hideout 15 miles away to go to a hangup call that was caused by Verizon's utter laziness, but it still doesn't help get anything done.

I would guess "Real" VoIP is when you have it end to end on a network that can do QOS and prioritize the VoIP traffic

yep.

once you cross networks you lose that quality of service. Or more specfically that QoS cannot be guaranteed. Why would I trust the QoS markings in a packet that is not within my network?
