PRIZE. One (1) Grand Prize: a museum quality F-4C Phantom Jet. The Jet has been decommissioned by the U.S. military, is not in working order, and may not be flown.

Yeah, can't be flown. The drawing is in July 2008 and you have 45 days to pick it up. That'd be a tight schedule.

1950's goverment regulations banned private ownership of flyable former US military aircraft. I think this applies to fixed wing only. But it might also cover choppers, (Id love to get a Used (UH-6 little bird.) I am not too sure how far it extends but I am sure with out a doubt that the law covers fighers and bombers.

A few years ago I remember reading about some guy who bid on a F-18 Hornet at a gov't scrap metal auction. Somebody screwed up and forgot to cut up all the pieces of the disassembled jet. After 5 years or so he was able to piece it all back together.

I dont know how true that is, i've read a few articles about people who privately own F104 starfighters.

Just as a general question, how would one get their hands on a operational Yak-38?

More like how would you ever get training on how to fly it? ;)

Correto-mundo! That is the reason why billionaires all own Soviet MIGS and why you can no longer buy any thing newer than B-29, P51, etc.

I remember that story, the US government was having a fit over what he was doing. He almost had it flightworthy and the feds radied his home, captured the jet, and put it in a salvage heap to be destroied. So much for our own right to bear arms.

Either they were foreign or were Pre-ban Starfighters.

This reminds me of the time when I lived back in florida.... some crazy flew up into the US with a Russian MiG.... don't remember the exact designation, but I think he was looking for live missiles, and had placed an ad in a Fl. newspaper looking for them, and that's how they caught him. The jet was stored at Homestead AFB and a bunch of the airforce guys stripped the aircraft before the AF could claim it.

I recall my dad told me he visited the hanger where command had put up a sign near the jet that said no charges would be brought if all the missing pieces turned back up, and needless to say, they did. :p

wow that Hind sale is amazing. Seems really cheap too in working condition.

Whats the deal with this stuff and military jets? Can civilians buy miltary aircraft and fly it in most western countries? I would think there must be some sort of special international laws over the public flying of military jets of a certain time frame.

Too bad it is grounded, my dad would love it. While I don't think he ever flew the -C model, it shouldn't be too different from the -E and -G models that he spent years flying.
