Interesting to make an AI behave like a human opponent. Much more difficult than making it just blatantly "cheat" to be hard to beat.

So many nights wasted in highschool with friends playing this till the early morning. Ahh the memories.

Damn straight...you knock out the first place guy with a shell and he falls to 8th place. With insane speed, he moves from last place to right back behind you and sometimes passes you. And then the damn AI gets powerups and items without having to run over those question mark boxes. What the hell?!!? Mario and Luigi were the worst AI opponents since they always used the star at every opportunity. Everyone else sucked too, seriously like 2-4 bananas, eggs, shells etc... per lap the AI can put down. And whats up with princess and toad being able to throw shrinking mushrooms at you...why couldn't I get the mushrooms as a powerup?

I consider it fair recourse that they follow the EXACT SAME PATH every time, so I know exactly where to drop bananna peels and shells to make them wreck miserably, like topping off a wreck by missing a jump, drowning, or getting stuck behind a wall.

Put a shell between the 2nd and 3rd from the left? speed panels in Mario Circuit 2 (right before the jump) and watch them barely clear the first wall and keep ramming the second wall until you almost lap them. Works every time.

The AI in Pacific Fighters (IL2 expansion) flies on simplified flight models, has sniper aim, and the turret gunners are super accurate.

People whine about it, but other than the turret gunners part, i think its for the better. . .

In a situation as complex as a WWII dogfight a computer can't hope to keep up with a human player who knows what he's doing, so it makes offline play at least a little challenging. That said, you can still go offline and hope in a P-38, and down 16 'ace' AI zeros of similiar year if you know your tactics, with little trouble.

I'd take cheating AI that puts up a good fight over non cheating AI that is worthless.

I don't know if War3 cheats, but it does multitask unbelievably (impossibly) well, which I'm not sure I'd consider a cheat. It's not fair that the AI is able to control it's troops in a battle full time and also manage it's economy at home with it's full attention as well, but I guess that's the closest we're going to get for now. I'd like to hear some developer talk of the hot new AI in their game instead of just the usual screenshots.
