Real-time collab. editing of a file

Is there any (free) app that will let three or more people edit one file at the same time?
I've tried to Google it but I keep getting a bunch of corporate collaboration nonsense

It's pretty much impossible to do this. If just 2 people have it open, first person saves their changes, then the second person saves their changes and it overwrites whatever the first person did and he/she loses their work.
