real quick question!

when installing IDE components (1 cd drive, 1 hard disk) can you put both the IDE drive on the same cable? or do you need to use both IDE ports and buy a second cable?

no, you can put both on the same cable

Yes, one has to be set to Master and the other set to Slave via the jumpers on the device. Naturally, the master goes on the end of the cable opposite the end that plugs into the mboard, and the slave goes on the remaining connector.

I have seen cables that only have 2 connectors, rather than 3, though.

if you have 2 ide devices on 1 channel you need to set one to slave and one to master, if you put 1 drive per channel both can be master

Understand that both drives won't be able to send/recieve information at the same time. If you're only going to have two IDE devices, it's better to put one on each controller.

Actually, no.. it's not.

As Chaotic says, they won't be able to be accessed at the same time, which really isn't a big deal, but since us computer builders are anal about performance, it's better to put them both as Master on seperate channels as long as you have the room.

If you ever add another drive, you can stick it on as Primary slave.

Edit: You don't have a 2nd cable? You can use a normal 40pin conductor IDE cable for your cdrom.. use the 80 conductor for your HDD.

How much space do you need?

The Western Digital 120gb Special Edition drives with 8megs cache and a 3 year warranty can be had for almost nothing if you're into price matching and rebates. If not, they're still only about 100$, which is very reasonable.

worse comes to worse and you can't find a second ide cable (I'd go with 66 min) slave the cdrom and master the hd drive. course
SVC.com has rounded cables for uber cheap. Lastly don't scrimp on the HDdrive. Bigger = better 🙂 >180gb WD SE are sweet

there are some really good deals over in that FS/T forum we got here. i was doing some price searching for a small raid 0 stripe im fixing to set up here and found that you can get some pretty good deals over there.

unfortunately, i went to newegg and bought two 30GB maxtors and a PCI raid controller for around ~130. 🙁

gotta have it new and with warranty guys :beer:
