I just got a HD4870 to replace my 8800GT OC (which I have no problems with)

The Drivers for the 4870 are fairly new but whenever I run 3dmark 06 or vantage there is usually a hard crash that results in my screen and comp blacking out, (Still running computer, no HD light, and high fan speed on the card).

Think its a driver issue or PSU issue?

EDIT: FIXED!

Nope, should I have?

Reformat what precisely? The whole Drive? Reinstall Vista?

I used an Nasty Nvidia Remover Tool and Driver cleaner before the install in vga safe mode.

No....reformatting to solve problems is just the clod's way of dealing with anything beyond their comprehension. Whenever there's a problem that could remotely be associated with drivers/software incompatibilities, the simpleton answer is always "Reformat and reinstall your OS."

About your power supply.....it should be enough, more than enough actually, to run your video card. But I never was really impressed with the 750's build...OST main cap and Ltec secondary caps. Neither brand is above mediocre and while no huge waves of failure complaints are around, the build just didn't suit me. (I did buy one, but after doing further reading after its purchase, I returned it.) The recommended ps is 500W or better, and since yours can deliver up to 19A on the PCI-e connector, and the card can draw around 12.5-13A via its two 6-pin connectors, the only thing I'd consider is what rail you've got the video card on. I'd try to ensure it's using a rail by itself....your manual should spell out what rail is powering what cables/connectors.

Now, are you using the CCC 8.6 AND the hotfix CCC drivers? Make sure you apply the hotfix drivers if you haven't already done so.

And how hot is the card getting while at full tilt? I'd look into editing a profile to run your fan at 50% speed, minimum. How to do this is located in the other longer 4850/4870 thread(s).

I'd really think it's either a driver issue or heat issue....not a "You gotta reformat your hard drive," issue.

Nice try but WRONG. The hotfix contains the driver and CCC. Don't need both.

Hey OP, is your 8400 OC 100% stable? The crash could be from an unstable OC. Have you ran Orthos or OCCT? I'd highly doubt the psu is the problem. A 4870 only draws 150 watts.

OC is stable but I've backed off quite a bit for this problem entirely.

I usually don't OC when I install new pieces of hardware to avoid stability issues.

HAHA That is always a tech department's answer to everything, re-image the HDD.

I just ran through 3DMark06 last night without any issues. None of the crashing that you're experiencing. I don't have Vantage though, so no idea about that one.

EDIT: As far as the reformat thing - I agree with the others who feel that it's gratuitous and unnecessary in this case.

EDIT2: Are you using the fan fix though? Or trying to run it with the fan at stock settings?

Both, although I was having issues with the 3dmark06 compatibility mode in vista 64..had to run it in xp sp1. This could be the main issue I'm hoping.

Furmark runs fine, rgb 1.1 runs fine, ATI tool ran fine for half hour no errors

Now I have been able to play crysis for more than an hour, AoC ran fine except for a small lockup which the really quick flash of artifact...power down for a quick second but it popped right back into the game

Drive Sweeper found ALOT of NV crap.

Driver Cleaner Pro found like 2 things and I used Nvidias removal tool (\headslap)

3dmark runs fine, no power issues or stuttering.

I think it was the old NV crap.

Thanks guys
