Overclock validation from the tester coolice here

Compare with Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550/Q9450 - 45nm Prevails :: Articles :: www.hardwarezone.com® looks like its below Q9450.

On stock clocks..

CineBench 10 32-bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 ... 11165
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 ... 10506
Phenom II X4 ................. 9754

3Mark06 CPU score
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 .... 4783
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 .... 4483
Phenom II X4 ................... 4483

Aquamark3 CPU score
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 .... 19129
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 .... 18117
Phenom II X4 .................... 15745

Another (unvalidated) here
Phenom II shows up in the HardForums. First thread with pics and specs and a second thread with benchmarks. Seems they were for sale as well. Two sites had Phenom II 940 and 920 processors for sale, but they have been pulled. For the record, I would not expect to see any official Phenom II information from Hard|OCP until the second week of January, as AMD seems to be making us hold our information till it is worthless as far as any surprises. But I will say this, I don't think we would have anything surprising to show you anyway, unless you actually had high expectations for Phenom II. If you own a socket AM2+ motherboard, I would not throw it out quite yet, but I damn sure would not be purchasing a new one.

Now we are beginning to see why AMD only compared the Phenom II X4 940 with Intel's Q9300 and Q9400 in their (leaked) slides here and here.

Synthetic benchmarks mean almost nothing to me. Show me some real world numbers and I'll be excited, otherwise these numbers dont mean much to me nor many other people.

Agreed. I'd rather see real world benches before I draw any conclusions. I'm not going to put much into 3DMark. On no.... Phenom plays Aquamark slower! :(

You are comparing results between two different sites. No one knows what the parameters are surrounding either one. Your title and post are kinda misleading.

If those scores are real, and the PII 940 costs $200 or less, it will be a great CPU. Those two intel chips cost upwards of $300-350.

We need to see some overclocking results compared with how high the intel chips can go.

We also need a legitimate side-by-side comparison as others have said.

Do any of you know when the NDA will be lifted? Is it mid-January? Then why are people saying the chips will be available before Christmas?

PII will be "competitive" with C2Q. AMD plans to undercut Intel's pricing by a yet undetermined amount, based on the early adoption rate.

At least that's what an acquaintance of mine (who's an AMD employee) says.

I'm sure this info shocks no one.

It would be nice if _1_ site would compare amd & intel on three things

1- price range
2- absolute STOCK clock speed
3- performance per dollar

a- synthetic benchmarks (sandra, 3dmark, superPi, etc)
b- real world benchmarks (games, render apps, rar/zip, audio/video)

and when if possible, major software test related to server usage, for the server freaks :)

If you mean C2Q V PII, it is hard for them to put any real numbers together due to NDA.

Also, pricing will be fluid at the PII release. Intel will see what kind of buzz the processors get, and cut pricing of C2 accordingly. (Just my guess. But if they dont, they deserve to get undercut)

It's what it is though.

In the last two earnings calls AMD has said they will not have the fastest chips. I don't know why people are expecting more.

What else is new from the company that doesn't usually make money....

The Radeon 4870 isn't the fastest GPU, and is exactly what AMD hyped it to be, yet it is very successful. I think a lot of people are hoping for the PhII to be similar to the 4870 in that it'll be a very competitive part at a very good price.

so wait your telling me all this hipe was once again failure???

And i was really looking forward to AMD...

Can we see some real overclocking scores? if the PHII can overclock to excess of 4ghz, it would keep up with the higher class yorkies (Only applies to overclockers of course)... not the real world...

This is all nonsense until the reviews come out.

Are these chips really going on sale before Christmas?

I have been waiting forever to build this:

~$200 Quad
~$125 Motherboard
Plentiful cheapo DDR2 RAM
~$200 GPU
~$75 PSU

I keep waiting to do this. I don't know why I haven't already gone with a Kentsfield all these months. I keep waiting for 'something special'. I think my patience might break in a month or two. This better open up a can of bang-for-buck.

The cinebench numbers don't look promising. Those in any case have some connection to the real world. Then again, obviously the jury's still out.

How in the world can a PII beat C2Q if it cant at 3Ghz Vs 2.66GHz even with a half L2 cache Q9400,btw dont forget that Q9550 or Q9650 can overclock to 4Ghz or more on air also.If it loses clock for clock, dont expect it to beat Yorkfield anytime soon.
Now those AMD fanboys who put up their hope dreaming PII would beat i7 would probably need to get a little more realistic.

lol. You could have done that a long time ago. Okay, maybe not that long ago. I am not sure when the Kentsfields dropped below 200.

Then the PhII needs to have 90% of C2Q performance at 70% the price. I don't think this is good for AMD's bottom line.

It's a different situation with CPU's, anyway. The general populace is more familar with CPU's than GPU's. Although AMD has made inroads over the last half-decade or so in terms of name recognition and perception, Intel is still better known and more of a "premium" brand. Many folks still automatically assume that Intel is superior. The only way most folks know how to gauge a video card is thru memory capacity; there's alot of people out there who think a 1 gb card is automatically superior to a 512mb card.

i THINK THE q6600 G0 stepping chips have been in the market for awhile and below 200 dollars for an oem for a bit as well.

I have bought several mobos for under 125 capable of running a quad and ocing it to 450fsb...

PLus I have bought 2 600+ PSU recently for 75 or under...one for 29 after MIR...

Actually the cinebench numbers equate well to CAD based applications....

lol i hope your not calling me an AMD fanboy..

as i am running an Unreleased Intel Gainestown CPU on my main system as i type this..

:p

I would still like to see the overclock numbers on a PII. True it wont catch to yorkfield, i know what these guys can do, i had 4 clocked at 4ghz+, However if it can get CLOSE, and is reproducable...

I dont think a budget builder who overclocks can miss out on a total system price of that nature..

Of course if you have bling... you can always go this full blown route.. (AMD never had any intensions of catching this platform)

But not everyone has 4 figures to burn on a new computer now do they? :T

You can build that right now... there are very good quads from both companies for that price range. And $200 buys you a lot of GPU these days (Radeon 4870 512MB/GTX260 192). Of course if you can wait a little longer, PhII will be here in about a month and if nothing else it'll probably drive some prices down on low end Intel quads and current Phenoms.
