Real Oath Taken WITHOUT a Bible...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Obama retook his oath of office Wednesday after Chief Justice John Roberts flubbed while delivering it at Tuesday's inauguration.

The second oath -- also administered by Roberts -- took place at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday in the White House's Map Room. Roberts asked Obama whether he was ready.

"I am, and we're going to do it very slowly," Obama replied.

A Washington Post reader complained in a letter to the editor: "What could have been a moment for the ages was marred by Mr. Roberts' thoughtlessness. News outlets will report that the first words of our new president were "confused." Whether through design or an amazing lack of preparation, Justice Roberts's behavior was a disgrace."

And Fox News anchor Chris Wallace said: "We're wondering here whether or not Barack Obama in fact is the president of the United States. They had a kind of garbled oath. It's just conceivable that this will end up going to the courts."

Though a Bible was used in Tuesday's oath, one was not used for Wednesday's.

The Bible is not a requirement of the oath, and neither is the phrase "so help me God." So, even if it took two tries to get it right, it's still 100% legal and binding.

Embarrassing for Roberts? You're damn right! But, legal and binding nonetheless...

Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation: ? "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Bible and/or flubs by Chief Justice not found. Go troll elsewhere.

Actually from a strict legal standpoint, the use of the word "shall" and the prescriptive wording does mean that the original flub could potentially have been an issue were it not for the second oath.

And both are constitutional scholars...Oy!

On the other hand, media or not, Roberts was to administer the oath-- which is to say prompt or invoke the oath first (correctly we are left to presume) while Obama was to repeat the oath after Roberts.

There is evidence that Obama recognized Roberts first mistake (the pause)--but didn't fix it after Roberts mangled it a second time.

Personally, I liked the oath better all f-up. Damm the Constitution, as Dick Cheney would no doubt agree.

As far as the bible thing goes-- a photoshoped image of Sarah Palin doing Joe the Plumber would be a very reasonable and suitable substitute.

Several presidents have repeated their oath of office for different reasons.

In the cases of Presidents Chester A. Arthur (1881)[12][13] and Calvin Coolidge (1923)[14], they both had taken the first oath in a private venue (their residences), in the middle of the night right after being notified of the death of a predecessor (James A. Garfield and Warren G. Harding, respectively), and later retaking it after returning back to Washington. In the case of Coolidge, there was an additional doubt whether an oath administered by a public notary (Coolidge's father) would be valid.[15]

Four presidents have taken a private oath because Inauguration Day fell on a Sunday, and then a second oath in a scheduled public ceremony on the next day (Monday): Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877 (who actually took the private oath on March 3rd, a Saturday, one day before his term started), Woodrow Wilson in 1917, Dwight Eisenhower in 1957, and Ronald Reagan in 1985.[16][17][18][19]

This oath was administered in a simple, private ceremony in the Map Room of the White House, attended only by a few close aides (without reporters present, without First Lady Michelle at the side, and also without using a Bible, though the audio was recorded).[11][20][21][22] Obama's oath-retaking differed from all his predecessors' in that the private ceremony happened after the public one.
