Real life type game - RPG of sorts, suggestions?

I want a game. Simple enough.

I've played Half Life, Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Toca, Toca 2, Grand Prix 3, Age of Empires 1 & 2, Enter the Matrix, Unreal 2 & Tourny 2003, Crimson Skies, Sim City, The Sims, Baldurs Gate, Diablo, Black & White, Deus Ex.

I want a game, something special that's got that little extra spark, and I mean some real kind of spark. I'm waiting on Republic: The Revolution, but that's going to be at least a week or so until I can have it, so I want something else in the mean time.

No hardcore FPS, they get a bit boring. Something almost like real life in some aspects, where there are people, and there's action when you want it, without hours and hours of wandering, and there's some kind of story, and it looks fairly good.

I'm thinking an RPG, but I really can't seem to find anything that looks good.

If anyone has recommendations, it would be lovely.

Gothic 2 was one option suggested in another thread. Anyone else?

Gothic 2, Divine Divinity, Nox, Mistmare, Of Light & Dark The Prophecy, Throne of Darkness, Septerra Core, Technomage and Grom are the options I have found.

Anyone got any thoughts on any of them?

(I also ordered Baldurs Gate 2 because it was £4 or about $6, but I want other stuff too)

Even though it's an old game, and seems slowly paced at first, I really enjoyed Jedi Knight II. It's dated (I think it used the Q3 engine), but getting the force powers make it all worthwhile. You should be able to find it cheap.

Another FPS with a twist (more RPG) was System Shock II. The interface wasn't the best, the graphics are old, but parts of it are (or were) frightening. Again, should be cheap.

Oh, and Gothic I. That was great.

And for strict RPGs, Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights, or even Dungeon Siege. Or the old school Planescape: Torment (fantastic game).

Good luck in your search.

Not really in the RPG category, but GTA3: Vice City is a real life type game. If you can consider the 80s real life.

Action when you want it? Check.

Looks fairly good? Check.

Some kind of story? Check.

Potential to own a stripclub and a (porn) movie studio? Check.

oh... sorry... that wasn't on your list. Great game anyway. 😉

From what I've heard, System Shock II is a great game and sounds like it fits your description. I've never played it, though.

Also, I thought the Opposing Force addon for Half-Life was as good as the original. So if you liked Half-Life, there is a great chance that Opposing Force is up your alley. You get to be one of the soldiers that show up to shut the place down and shoot and Gordon Freeman (you don't actually encounter him, though you do get to meet the G-man).

Want something totally different and retro? Get Angband, a freeware "graphical" dungeon game. In this case, graphical refers to the fact that the game uses ASCII characters and an overhad view. You are the '@' and monsters are represented by letters. 'S' is a giant spider, 'R' a reptile.. etc.

Morrowind and all the add-ons

Definitely Morrowind. Mafia is good too. It's along the same lines as GTA 3.

Also try Splinter Cell.
But this is the order:
1) Mafia (Best of the Best)
2)Morrowind
3)GTA3 & Vice City
4)Splinter Cell

Star Wars Galaxies is coming out 6/25... If youre a Star Wars nerd, im sure youll enjoy congregating with other nerds.

I never did finish System Shock 2 completely, but it's a great game nonetheless. It's up there as well as one of the scariest games I have ever played. 🙂

Real life-ish type stuff to do and wandering around exploring a lot sounds like a perfect match for Morrowind or Gothic to me.

I heard Gothic 1 and 2 are both top notch.

How about RTS games? Rise of Nations is classy. Warcraft 3 is a blast, with an excellent - and I mean excellent - single player campaign.

I third or fourth the vote for System Shock 2. Haven't finished it either, but it's certainly scary enough.

Icewind Dale 1 (+ Heart of winter expansion) and 2 are both good. Planescape Torment by Black isle is apparently great too.

Lionheart by black isle is coming later this year...rpg set in an alternate universe 16th century europe where a brief influx of mag...uh read about it for yourself

I enjoyed GTA3 for a while.

Morrowind became severely dull after a couple of weeks.

Avoid Nox and Throne of Darkness, they're mediocre Diablo clones. Grom is completely shallow. Septerra Core is apparently pretty decent, but short. Technomage I haven't heard of, nevermind played. Divine Divinity is a slightly better Diablo clone. Mistmare and The Prophecy I haven't played, but check out the review of the latter here: avault's review

Daggerfall owns morrowing, anyone else agree?
Daggerfall became about as dull as Morrowind at about the same time. Plus the bugs *shudder*

Great ideas though, and plenty of fun at times.

I agree, but of course it has alot to do with the context of when Daggerfall was released. I was much younger and more easily impressed, not to mention the competition at that time was virtually nil

I pretty much agree. Unfortunately I couldn't finish the game because of a game-killing bug.

Playing as a vampire was priceless. 😛

Yeah, I'd love to go finish Daggerfall now, but I can't get it to work on any of my machines now. There seems to be a timing bug with spell casting. I can play the game fine for a while, but as soon as I start fighting spellcasters, I'm dead because they cast too fast. The speed is fine everywhere else, but casters can cast instantly, so as soon as I am in line of site, I just die immediately as hundreds of spell damage messages fly across the screen. Oh well...
