Real life external hard drive performance?

I'm considering using an external USB 2.0 hard drive to image computers.

Does anyone with some real world experience know how long it takes to trasfer the following amounts of data from an external hard drive to an interal hard drive?

1GB

20GB

(or something I can use to interpolate)

I'm guessing I shouldn't just take the USB 2.0 transmission speed of 480Mbps and just calculate it out. I'm also skeptical of the sustained transfer rates quoted by most vendors 🙂

toms hardware, review of a wd external drive

they have some benchmarks compairing firewire/usb2 for transfer with this particular drive.

I'm using an external notebook hdd with USB 2.0 and it averages 250-350 MB a min.

1 Gig = appx. 2 1/2mins on my Bytecc Case with a WD120 Gig SE
