Many ppl think it stands for With Out Papers due to the large influx of italian immigrants in the beginning of the last century. But that turns out to be not true according to what I have read. Apparantly, the The word comes from the Spanish word guapo which meant beatiful, handsome. But it was used in a sarcastic manner against Italian migrant grape workers in Iberian vineyards. Pretty boy, Dandy boy. Teh spanish men hated the italian men cause the spanish ladies liked them 😉

A joke says that they call them WOP cause it is the sound of shxx when it hits the wall.

(My dad is italian, so i have heard all the italian jokes... and wanted to know what it really meant, so i looked it up years ago.)
