Real HDTV or Not

It does not need a converter box. You will need a HDTV tuner. The TV is HDTV compatible but it does not have the necessary hardware to decode the HDTV signals. It can only display them.

Ok think I got it.

There are 2 boxes.

1 is a converter from HDTV to a standard tv.(which this shouldnt need)

The other is a converter box to convert a HDTV signal(IE from the cable company) to a HDTV.(which 90% of HDTV's need).

Only the more expensive HDTV's have built in decoders and require no boxes at all.

Is that sorta right?

Uhhh no such box exists

No, it isn't right at all. They are not converter boxes, they are HDTV receiver boxes. There are 3 different types of HDTV receivers as follows:

1) Over the air receiver, ie antenna
2) Cable HDTV receiver
3) Satellite HDTV receiver

Now, some of the boxes will do two of the HDTV types. Like some of the satellite HDTV receivers will do both over the air antenna HDTV as well as satellite HDTV. You DO NOT want a HDTV set with a built in receiver, because it may not be the type of receiver that you want to use.
