Update: In an effort to thwart negative comments, Real has started a new petition without public comments available. The freedomofchoicemusic.org site now points to a new URL. This new petition currently has 35 signatures.

Yesterday Real Network's launched the "Freedom of Choice" anti-Apple ad campaign, website and online petition in its efforts to stop Apple from keeping the iPod a "locked" platform. Today, the campaign has backfired with over 500 mostly anti-Real comments appearing on the petition's website resulting in Real removing the link to freedomofmusicchoice.org on its website.

http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?r4apple HAHA this is the link to the petitions mentioned.

I love it, Real got pwned by their own campaign.

lol. is real truly that naive to think they would have the backing of the online community? after all these years of placing automatic start-up programs and annoying applications on our systems that drain system resources and function like crap, that we would just hop on to their side because they are taking on apple?

Yeah, I dont feel bad for them either. I guess thats what they get for trying some guerilla tactics and using trying to use the public for their own gains.

You are correct, sir.

Look up Real Alternative / Quicktime Alternative. It's a way to get the actual "codecs" without using their respective players. Awesome IMO.

Way to go Real for tripping on their own petard.

Exactly. This is just as stupid as Netscape demanding that it's browser come with Windows.

If we're talking about netscape 4.x and higher, I agree with you. But I fondly remember netscape 2.x and early 3.x being a great little browser which was way ahead of microsoft at the time.

Then IE started to get better. But the main reason I switched was because netscape got so much worse...turned into a bloatware turd.

Should Nissan be forced to sell Dodge parts? Should Chevrolet be forced to sell Ford parts? Hell no. MS shouldn't be required to have anything to do with Netscape if they so choose. Windows shouldn't have to pack more than what MS wants to pack with it. Don't like it? Don't use windows.

:)

your analogy works so well because nissan and microsoft are in such similar market positions

No, it works well because I used several differnet companies. By doing so, I avoid direct correlation between companies and market share, which is not my point. The point I make is that a company sells their own product. They shouldn't be forced to sell/incorporate other companies products.

Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ... use your freakin imagination. :frown:

This guy sums up my thoughts everytime I find Real Player installed on a PC.

MrHC: "God dammit, REAL still isn't out of business?"

Seriously, after the dot-com bust and the evening out of the tech business TONS of GOOD companies went down the toliet. But Real is apparently a tough floater that just won't flush.

I actually agree with you...I was mostly just waxing nostalgic about back when netscape was everything I wanted in a browser. Then they added more and more until it sucked total ass.

Well your logic is flawed because Microsoft was being a little bitch when companies like IBM and Compaq wanted to sell computers with 3rd party apps pre-installed (based on, say, IBM's partnership with AOL for example).
