ReadyNAS Duo - Cannot Boot, Cannot Reset?

Somehow while I was away for the holidays one of my ReadyNAS Duo's got corrupted. The device would not post (power LED blinking and fan @ full speed).

So I try a "soft" reset by holding the reset button for ~5sec which should reset factory settings but keep my data. I let it run for about an hour but still blinking blue LED and fans @ full speed. So I pull the power plug to turn it off (no luck w/ holding the power button) and fire it back up.

It boots up but I am getting error codes via the LED's that the drive is damaged (2 blinks on some restarts and 3 on others). So I pull the drives and put them in another machine to run WD Lifeguard on them. One drive is bad (error code 0226) and the other reports fine.

I pull the bad drive and put the good one back in my ReadyNAS. Power it up and it gives me a bad drive error code (via blinking LED's) and RAIDar reports the same. So I try the "soft" reset, wait an hour and still fans @ full and blinking led. So I try the full factor (~30sec holding reset button) which will destroy my data (but it's backed up elsewhere).

After starting with factory reset I have let it run for over an hour but the status remains blinking LED and fans @ full speed.

My questions are:
1. How long should the reset take? Am I just not waiting long enough?
2. Am I at the point of needing to try to reinstall the OS via flash drive?
3. Does it matter that my drives aren't on the officially approved list even tho they've been fine for over a year?
4. What other diagnostic or repair things could I try?

Other info:
1. The drives are/were both WD10EADS - 1TB "Green" drives.
2. I have tried reseating the SODIMM, but it seemed fine initially.
3. There is a 2nd ReadyNAS duo on my network that is working fine and it was up for the entire time the malfunctioning unit was.

Thanks.

Hi, I had the same problem...

1) you have to restore factory setting (push reset button more then 30 sec) and wait long long time (more the 1 hour)...

Hi nik81,

I am having the same problems with the factory resetting, I have waited almost 24 hours now, and I am starting to think something is wrong, I have heard from another board that Netgear's technical support advised a customer to expect 24 hours. The waiting time is 23 hours, how long did you wait and how large was your harddrives? I only have one 1TB disk, would appriciate to get some indication of how long this is going to take.

Thank you.
